Just posing three questions, that I think are fair, to help us think more clearly about the significance of the portal.
(1) Who have the Beavs ever acquired in the portal who made a significant impact on the program?
(2) Who have the Beavs ever lost in the portal who made a significant impact on the team they joined?
I know some of you follow this topic closely, so I'm interested in your thoughts....
(3) Another question unrelated to the portal, but one that truly bugs me: Why did Rueck so openly and effusively praise Greta as a great Beaver prospect? He said her game was a mix of Pivec and Tudor before she ever hit the floor...Talk about raising expectations!! I understand coach-hype - but is it possible that his assessment of her abilities was really be that far off base?
Or did Greta just need another year at Gill, and in the system, for his assessment to be confirmed?.. I kept waiting for flashes of exceptional talent from her - but they never arrived. Did coach really mis-read her talent level? Or did he simply fail to find a way for it to show itself? GO BEAVS!!

1, Too new, Can't think of any. 2. Same as answer 1. 3. Same praise every single recruit gets on this board in the recruiting section. What is the percentage of players that actually reach the full expectations of the coaches and fans. Fan hype is worse than coach hype here.
Maybe 30 to 40%, maybe even less reach that expectation level? You just can't guarantee what you will be getting anymore.

Ellie Mack was a grad transfer. Totally different.
Destiny Slocum, she used the "transfer portal" before it existed.
The transfer portal is not some magic machine, like in that Dr Pepper commercial. It's just a new, expedited process players use to let coaches know they have a desire to leave their current school and are available to be recruited, and that schools can contact them without any tampering penalties. It didn't exist when Slocum left Maryland but if it had this was the process she would have used.

Sasha clearly fits 2
AS A SOPHOMORE (2021-22) Made an immediate impact in her first season home … The only Hog to start all 32 games … Averaged 11.5 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.1 blocks, 1.4 assists, 0.7 steals, 29.3 minutes per game … 43.6 FG %, 29.9 3FG %, 60.6 FT % … 21 games in double figures, one game with 20+ … Was a shot blocking machine during her first season on the Hill, rejecting a whopping 66 shots … That mark is the third best mark in program history, trailing only legendary Hog post players Delmonica DeHorney and Lauren Ervin … Her 2.1 BPG average was good for fourth in the SEC, trailing only Tamari Key, Aliyah Boston and Jenna Staiti, all post players … Blocked 3+ shots in 11 games … Helped Arkansas lock up its NCAA Tournament spot, dropping in a season-high 20 points at Mississippi State … Had 11 points and five blocks in Arkansas’ OT win over Mizzou in the SEC Tournament … Hit the decisive three against Jackson State in Arkansas’ 66-62 win … Dropped in 18 in Arkansas’ comeback win at Missouri … Double-doubled against Mississippi State at home, going for 13 points and 12 boards … Helped Arkansas hold off Auburn while missing three starters, scoring 16 points and grabbing five rebounds.

Yeah, I especially recall the off-the-charts praise for Jasmine Simmons from one poster on this board. I’m not sure if you meant me, but I definitely was high in her. She had/has athleticism that was very elite, and in her highlights coming in she was very disruptive in passing lanes and scored often on breakaways after steals. In retrospect, that ability didn’t translate at all because OSUs defense does not allow for gambling much in jumping passing lanes, and she struggled to find a way for her skills to fit in OSU’s style. It seems to me that she might have been much better off playing in a style like UCLA. To me Simmons is an example of the transfer rules being a good thing, even though she didn’t utilize it - she instead gave up on the sport completely.

The guy I'm referring to said she would, from day one be, "like Pivec on steriods". Talk about hype.

Things changed for Greta while our team had to wait to get are post situation back in production. The loss of Taylor affected the perimeter in general. She allowed the perimeter to get better looks because defenses had to be concerned about her. The team and Greta went thru several weeks and very rough games trying to figure out who will be the new Taylor. Greta was more relaxed in her shot in pre season. With Taylor there. One man’s opinion.
