Maybe some of you remember what we complained about last year with our pitchers....So here are the numbers for the series against Cal.
Walks given up: 4 HBP: 1 Wild Pitches: 0 Balks: 0
That's not the total from one game--it's the whole series.
I think we have a fine pitching staff.
Of course, we have to get the HRs under control, but Cal is a good HR hitting team.

Cal is very aggressive at the plate and when they get a pitch to hit they hit it hard. They will take a game or 2 in their upcoming series.

Just gotta win. We were lucky to win the series. coulda went either way, easily. And while I love the lack of free passes, we don't have a lot of strike out guys.....guys like Verburg, and now Carpenter, make me nervous. He seems to get hit hard every time he's in. Furd should be a bigger test than Cal.
Be nice to get Pfennings back so Kmatz can go to Sundays, hopefully.
I still don't know if we have the pitching to go all the way, but it's a fun team, so I'm enjoying the ride.

The 4 BB issued and 2 HBP stats were definitely a bright spot for the OSU staff. Sebby was fairly solid in his relief appearance on Saturday. However, for the series, OSU pitchers allowed 21 runs, 33 base hits, 7 doubles, a triple and 5 home runs. That is a somewhat short of "fine pitching" by Beaver standards. We have to get some folks healthy
That's the highest 3-game series total this year for the Bears,
Florida STate - 12 runs USC - 14 runs Illinois - Chicago - 15 runs Arizona - 18 runs OSU - 21 runs
Holding an opponent to an average of 7 runs and 11 hits per game may win you a series but it won't get you a sweep.

Of course, we have to get the HRs under control, but Cal is a good HR hitting team. Of those five stats--BBs, HBPs, WPs and BKs--five is the fewest given up by Oregon State pitchers in a three-game set since the 2015 regular season finale against California. Andrew Moore started off the series with a complete game two-hit shutout. Moore faced the minimum batters. The first was erased on a strike 'em out, throw 'em out double play. The second was gunned down trying to advance on a pop fly to right. Moore issued no walks, no HBPs, no WPs and no BKs. Drew Rasmussen followed up Moore by throwing a complete game six-hit shutout with one error and walk. Rasmussen faced five more than the minimum with the defense turning three double plays. KJ Harrison also threw Brett Cumberland out at the plate after a terrible squeeze attempt. Travis Eckert started on Sunday, giving up four runs in 4.1 innings on seven hits and a walk to dig Oregon State a 4-2 hole. Zack Reser gave up another run in his inning on three hits to put Oregon State in a 5-2 hole. Kevin Flemer and Luke Heimlich got their six hitters out, and the Beavers were able to claw back to 5-3. Sam Tweedt replaced Heimlich and plunked a batter and gave up a triple to Robbie Tenerowicz while only notching one out. A successful squeeze scored Tenerowicz, which put California up 7-3, which proved to be the final. Oregon State did not earn a regional host site but was placed in the very winnable Dallas Regional. In game 2, Rasmussen gave up three runs in 4.1 but the bullpen allowed both of his runners to score to put Oregon State in a 5-0 hole, which the Beavers did not recover from. Eckert gave up three runs in two innings. Heimlich gave up two runs in 5.1 innings but a third came home on a two-run shot, which effectively ended the game in the eighth.

Take any of your favorite years of Beaver Baseball, and remove the Saturday and Sunday starters from the lineup pretty much from the beginning of the year, and how do they fare? And yet, here we are with one of the top teams in the country. Go ahead and ask Cal what they think about pitchers giving up free passes and free runs. Sure, you can cry about the number of runs given up or about the lack of a real closer, but there are positives to consider as well. And those positives show that the coaching staff is addressing the concerns of last year and that the pitchers are getting it. As much as we want it to be, the team is not a final product. It’s a process. These young men are learning and improving before our very eyes. It’s one of the main reasons I love this game.

Our pitchers got hit hard. We were lucky to escape with a series win......And I don't want to take anything from Cal. They are a game opponent. I think Mike Neu could be building something in Berkeley....be nice if they built some dugouts and maybe some better bullpens! I think everyone on here understands that this team is not a finished product....and it's baseball. Crazy s%#t happens weekly. imo, 3rd in the nation is a bit high right now based on our the current pitching. If Pfennings comes back in form, Kmatz to Sunday....then yea, we are looking that much better. And of course any given game our lineup could put up crooked numbers, so we're always in games. This week will be the biggest test so far.....Go Beavs!
