Scott does not do this as far as I know but do you think some coaches post season sit down with players and might strongly encourage them to hit the portal. That it it like planting carrots in the garden and going back and weeding out the weaker ones that don't look to perform as well. Or do you think the players just decide it all for themselves?
Like, "you came in as our three point shooter for us and you did not perform to that level this year so unless you improve off season it will be hard to find a fit for you here". I could see Gravy pulling stuff like this.
I don't know the answer if this is done by some coaches.

Wow, that's a tough question. I would hope that coaches are forthright throughout the season and the player knows her stock on the team. Obviously what I hope for and reality is different.

Something like this happened at Montana when Coach Holsinger arrived, and they helped ~6 women find new schools to transfer to. I don't think the entire story has been told, but there were 2 ex-coach's daughters in that mix. It seems like there were some attitudes that couldn't be reconciled, besides some skill level issues.

I think Montana did reasonably well given the drama of 3 different coaches in 3 years. They ended up with a 19 - 11 record. I'll try to keep up with them next year.

Montana had a bit of an up and down year. One of their better players got hurt and was pretty limited at the end of the year.
He brought in a pretty solid recruiting class including a top-100 player in Mack Konig (who was being recruited by some Pac-12 schools at one point). I think he’ll do pretty well there.
I’m not sure I could see Scott encouraging many of his players to enter the portal. Relatively small recruiting classes and bringing in few transfers generally doesn’t give much leeway when it comes to roster numbers.
Most of our losses to the portal have seemed to be players we would have liked to keep with the exception of maybe Faustino and Kalmer.
I’m not sure I could see Graves running players off to the portal, but I think stacking a roster naturally leads to people entering. There was simply never going to be enough minutes for Shelley, Mikesell, Chavez, PaoPao, Parrish, Scherr, etc. Unfortunately for them Mikesell and Shelley had much better years than Parrish and Scherr.

I have a friend in Montana, big "Lady Griz" fan, and yes, they are fine with being called that, and she said it was a real roller coaster, one great game, then a weird loss. Their star guard was out late in the season, they did ok with her gone, and worse when she came back, so , all in all, bewildering, but an ok record for a coach in a new situation and lotssssss of changes on the roster. gogriz.com/sports/womens-basketball/schedule/2021-22

Kalmer made the best move for her (with Slocum, Pivec and Goodman still in the mix) and she finished with a strong season at SDSU, 2019-20, where she was the teams leading scorer, minutes played, and 3-pt shots made .

Of course they do imo. If players don't fit in,the coaches are honest with them about their future in the program. They don't force them out,but most players want a fair opportunity for playing time, and want to be in the plans of the coaching staff. It's up to the players whether they stick around or move on.

Isn't it standard practice for a coach to sit down with each player after the season to discuss this last year and what the player needs to work on? If the player asks about starting/more minutes next year and beyond, I would expect the coach to provide an honest answer.
If a player is mired on the bench with no realistic hope of seeing the floor, it is in her best interest if the coach answers her honestly. At the same time, he would be doing her a disservice if he didn't also point out that being on the basketball team is just one small part of the total college experience.
It seems to me that Sasha Goforth left because the total experience wasn't there for her, even though she started. Conversely, Noelle Mannen looks like she's embracing everything, and is happy as can be just being on the team - any minutes are just a plus.
Ultimately, it's the player's decision, not the coach.

Exactly. The coaches typically have a sit down with every player and are honest with them about their future and what they need to improve on if they intend on staying. Back in the day,I remember Ralph Miller telling Danny Evans that he doesn't fit in with the program. Danny took it to heart and improved the areas he needed to and was a very solid player going forward. Point being,it can give some kids a wake up call as they can take the coaches advice and get better,or find a new home.

I think every skilled coach can let a particular player know, in an honest, straight-forward and dignified way, that the portal is their best option without ever once saying the word "portal." GO BEAVS!!

Great discussions by all. I heard that some coaches will have each player write down the number of minutes they expect to play in each game at the start of the season. I wonder what the best answer to give to a coach.

GO BEAVS!! I'm sure that Taylor Kalmer's transfer to San Diego St. was partly (mostly) due the ascendence of Aleah. Now, whether the coaches encouraged her to continue her career elsewhere or she decided entirely on her own, who knows? She had a good Sr season at SDSU in 2020, averaging 15.7 ppg and being named Mountain West HM All-Conference. Averaged 38 minutes per game. So if she was after PT - she got it. goaztecs.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/taylor-kalmer/5818

A little off-topic for this thread but I would've loved to have Taylor Kalmer on this years team. I always thought she was a good pg, but she was a victim of having Slocum, Pivek, and Goodman playing at the same time she was here.
