It was posted here last week - "Cope got into a physical altercation with a member of the coaching staff and is no longer with the team" this is Hunter Cope formally of UA...7-0 (his height, not record) and 265? Big unit gone bad...? There was not another Cope on the team, so yea.

We have a great offense, but Omaha is all about the pitchers. Hjerpe and Matz are good, and hopefully we get Pfennigs back. I like a lot of our middle relief (Lattery, Ferrer and Brown were lights out on Sunday, especially Ferrer!), but if we can't find a Closer we won't be making any noise in Omaha, might not get there at all. We wont be winning games 21-0 (no closer needed) come playoff time! Outside the box CLOSER possibilities: Thorsteinson, Ferrer and Sebby all have BAA of < .180. Between them: 26 IP, 32 SO, 7 BB, 15 H and 4 earned runs. Just for the visual pleasure of it, would love to see Hunter Cope (7') surprise us all to become the closer by June. Summer teammate in 2021 of Ryan Brown (Medford) - he pitched 3 one-inning stints for the Rogues. In 3 innings he Struck Out 9 (walked 4, 2 hits, 0 ER). Mitchel Verburg should be the closer barring injury. My gut says he will be successful. In the games against WSU and the anteaters, Verburg gave up runs in the second inning of his appearance. Just run him out there for one inning, the 9th. Yesterday was a very difficult spot in which he didn't come through. It was high risk to bring Carpenter in, and it failed.

I read about that back then, but my memory is like a sieve. Too bad he couldn't have channeled that attitude into something like Rob D. img.auctiva.com/imgdata/1/6/0/4/5/4/4/webimg/1103324578_o.jpg

It was high risk to bring Carpenter in? I guess if you consider nobody on and no outs high risk. Probably should just tell the kid to leave now, because he can never start an inning. Shouldn’t be pitching D1 if that’s the case.

Yep, high risk, in three ways. 1 run lead, top of nine in Pac-12 competition, stress! Carpenter, great kid with a lot of upside, not a lot of experience. Lets get him more time out there in less stressful situations before we put him in that spot again. Verburg, kind of telling him he's not the guy which is high risk if the guy who you want to be the guy does not get it done. Could leave you with a situation where no one has the nerves or confidence to be the guy. Verburg has shown himself to have nerves of steal in tight spots over the years, just not ready to give up on him and play rotating closer for the rest of the year.

Every pitcher is going to have nerves in that situation. You’ve got to put them in to see how they deal with the nerves. No way we should have only scored 1 run against that team in the first place. Shouldn’t have been in that situation.

Anyone else remember those Stanford preseason rankings? I didn't believe it then and here we are... 2nd week of Pac 12 play and they have been exposed. Wow, watching them against Arizona. Its like our Sunday woes, only it happens in all days for the Cardinal. The Beaver closers, whoever they may be, could be getting vulture wins against this team.

Cope is not on roster or team this year, just like Mundt Cope is not on the team for a very different reason. Mundt is hurt and Cope was told to leave. Saw Joey Mundt and Hunter Cope in a restaurant in Corvallis today. Both had Beaver gear on. Hunter had a splint and sling on his right arm. Appears rumors of his dismissal are just that—rumors.
