A word on the '22 Draft to be held on a TBD date between 6/1 and 7/20.
1) This year's draft will again be 20 rounds (40 rounds may have gone the way of the Buffalo).
2) MLB will conduct a pre-draft combine that includes on-field assessments, medical evaluations and drug testing.
3) Players who submit to a pre-draft physical at the combine and are drafted are guaranteed to receive 75% of slot value, or the player will become a free agent if the drafting team fails to sign him.
4) Players drafted after the 10th round who do not sign by the signing deadline may go to junior college as a “draft-and-follow” and be eligible to sign with their drafting club before the following draft.
Baseball America has published a pre-draft ranking update covering the Top-200 ranked draft prospects. The Beavers have three (3) pitchers included. Do not dispair over Jacob Melton - by the end of this season, Melton will be on many, if not all draft boards. Simply put, scouts need to see more of him - the 2021 injury and surgery were a slight delay in his exposure. Scouts need to be sure - they need assurance from a larger game sample - hell, you can see the skills immediately - scouts just need to see it hold up over time, maybe the majority of our schedule. If he continues his current level of play, he's off the board early. He has 5-tool player potential.
The 3 Beavs ranked:
# 98 Cooper Hjerpe - Cooper has slipped a few notches since the last ranking. Has been as low as #74
#110 Will Frisch - has slipped down from #80 due to the UCL injury. TJ in the next next week or two will likely take him off the board until 2023 at least
#153 Jake Pfennigs - Jake threw 90-92 at Post Falls HS, he's still throwing 90-92. That and consistency may be scouting concerns but he is still a coveted prospect. Draft Experts - "Should be gone by the conclusion of the 5th round."
