Oregon State has a very potent offense. There will be games it will be downright wicked good. There may be games, depending on the ballpark, weather and opposing pitcher, the offense will just be good. Variables can have a serious impact on your ability to score.
Think of the Oregon State offense as window dressing. The heart and soul of the OSU program is still pitching and defense. That was on display today. The Beavers made every routine play on defense today. Garrett got turned around on a foul pop up, that was the only glitch I recall. Dernedde is a vacumn cleaner at SS, charges everything and the throws are as accurate as lasers. McDowell made three catches in LF that were exceptional - the wind blown can of corn that required a circus catch and the two wind driven deep fly balls into the lerft field corner. Those plays were not "routine".
The pitching - the freshman from the Land of Enchantment is confident, poised and effective. He's 19 and will improve now with every appearance. He's 3-0 and counting. Ryan Brown hummed the edges at 92, touched 94 and sawed the Couger bats off in a fast 2 inning stint. D.J. Carpenter ? the metrics are frightening. He's 6-8, his extension must set his release point at about little league distance, with the pitch's downward trajectory = the height of the mound + DJ's release point + on the hitters knees at 33" - Calculating that angle of downward trajecory can make the hitter dizzy. He's throwing 94-95 and has touched 97. Who would want any of that? No thanks.
Pitching and defense with some explosive offense mixed in. That's how to win and that's Beaver baseball.

McDowell in left when Carpenter is pitching is a must. Fine catches and good speed on display.

Did I hear correctly during the stream that OSU has the 2nd best fielding % in the country?!(behind ND I think)
Exceptional if true. GREAT defense and a potent offense can help offset some of the losses on the mound.

Fielding percentage is nice but not always an accurate measurement of defensive prowess; % of outs on balls put in play is more accurate. Not sure those stats are available to the rank and file.

MLB Analytics Departments pay little attention to fielding % for several reasons. Some consider it a worthless stat because it measures only balls you make a play on, not balls you could/should have made a play on.
The 4 stats MLB tends to ignore or pay little attention to are: Fielding % Pitcher's W-L records RBI's and the Analyst's favorite joke: Pitcher Saves
Three favorites? On Base % (OBP) Weighted ERA (wERA) Wins above replacement (WAR)

Thanks for the great pitching report on Kmatz, Brown, and Carpenter Chin....I watched Brown throw his FB past top level HS bats at S.Salem a few years ago and thought at the time he was special. What was Kmatz showing on the gun with his FB?....and like you I have been impressed with his poise and overall pitching savvy as a freshman.

Jacob is radar-reading about where he was at Sandia HS - sitting on 90-91, but can dial it up a notch or two. His ticket is good command for a freshman of a 4-pitch mix. I expect him to increase his velocity over the next year which should translate to more spin on the secondary stuff, which will improve their effectiveness as well. More velo = more RPM's.
