Yes, I know it's early, but dam it, they looked great this past weekend. Solid pitching (41 strikeouts with only our #1 starter), great hitting, and nearly flawless defense.
The stats agree. 4th best fielding percentage in the nation. 4th best BA, 6th best OBP. Warren Nolan says their RPI is #13, with a non conference SOS of #57. Maybe they had some soft teams in Surprise, but the Anteaters are contenders.
Are there still any Canham doubters out there? Mitch has turned this team around. Those guys believe in him. I believe in him.
My only complaint is that we don't play small ball enough. In a tight game, when you get a guy on base, with no outs, why the hell do you not bunt on the next at bat? Casey worked it to perfection. Stole a number of wins that way.
Anyway, just thought I'd give my two cents worth. Damned proud to wear Orange and Black. We are back!

We’re having an exceptionally good non-conference season. I hope that success translates to the conference season and postseason. Every reason to be optimistic.

All things considered, OSU baseball has weathered some coaching changes rather well IMO. Pat Casey left some huge shoes to fill, the program he nurtured and his record at OSU is legendary. Pat Bailey got off to a solid start in 2019 but experienced a bit of a tailspin at the end and didn't finish the season on a high note.
The transitional year to Mith Canham and his staff in 2020 never really got off the ground, having been skuttled by the Covid 19 pandemic after only 14 games. Last year in 2021, the team scrapped its way to a very respectable 37 wins and reached the Ft. Worth Regional final.
2022 is off to a fast start in spite of some injury adversity. This is a very good team, and holds high promise for the season. Coach Canham and his young Beaver-bred coaching staff have done an excellent job preparing and leading this team into this season's quest to achieve some lofty goals.
Want not! We have a talented team that is in good hands.

What it would have looked like? We may never have any idea what kind of head coach Neske would be. I'll take what we've got every day of the week over what might have been.

Despite being called "Late Nate", I always liked Yeskie. I still do. It was his choice to move on. So be it. The man was a great pitching coach, but that doesn't necessarily equate to a great head coach. How many times have we seen assistant coaches elevated, only to fail?
And by the way, he went out to the mound when Casey told him to go. If anyone was late, it was Pat.

There's a reason he's not here and he currently doesn't have any other Head Coaching gig. He is a good pitching coach.

Just a total guess, but I'd be willing to bet the pitching staff likes Dorman a bit more than previous staffs liked Nate.

Regarding Small Ball.... I agree we don't play as much as the Legend did but we are trying.
Late in game 3 we tried to move a runner from first to second and the bunt was barely fair past the plate, UC Irvine catcher grabbed it and got the lead runner at 2b. So... we are trying.
This team steals more than other Beaver teams of recent memory. I didn't check the stats to compare just my observation and conclusion for this year so far.
I also think we have more HR power throughout the lineup which may cause you to go more MLB and do less small ball. I'm a fan of small ball but give Mitch credit he hasn't abandoned the concept completely.
The big question is in the bottom of the 10th down a run, 1 out... do you move Bazzanna to third with a bunt or take your two full swings to score him? I know what Mitch decided and it almost paid of with a game winning HR, just missed it. I think Pat would have bunted him over but just conjecture.

Cant help but wonder what this team would have looked like with Yeskie. I have to admit, I have not wondered that at all. I do wonder what this team would look like with Pfennigs and Frisch though.

I know what Mitch decided and it almost paid of with a game winning HR, just missed it. I think Pat would have bunted him over but just conjecture. Justin Boyd currently has six SBs and is on currently on pace for 33 SBs. That would set the Oregon State single season record in steals, breaking Dave Brundage's record of 29 in 33 attempts. Nick Madrigal was the last Oregon State player to lead the Pac-12 in steals with 16 in 2017. Madrigal had four at this point of the season, two back of Boyd. No. I think Mitchy Slick learned a lot from Pat Casey, and that Casey would have done exactly the same thing. In fact, I double checked, and Casey did not move the runners over with 1 out in game 1 of the 2013 College World Series with the same result. Also, just looking at metrics, your chances of tying the game are reduced by more than 21% by bunting and your chances of winning the game in that inning are reduced by almost 53%. Swinging away twice was probably the correct call. It just did not work out.

Speaking of the 10th Inning. The Anteaters made one stupid move. They didn't walk Melton. It worked for them but it was a huge gamble. Next up was Donkey, RH hitter who really hasn't been hitting like he did last year. Just saying....

Nobody in the history of the world bunts their #3 hitter with one out and a runner on 2nd. Almost nobody in the history of the world bunts their #3 hitter with no outs and a runner on third.
