The Beavers continue adding to their talented 2023 class with the addition of Eric Segura from Soledad HS in the Salinas Valley of northern California. The Soledad Aztecs play in the Pacific Coast Athletic League - the same League as OSU freshman IF, Jabin Trosky. Segura is listed at 6-1, 190 and he's a RHP that also plays 3B when not pitching. Segura is the 9th pitcher in this class and the 17th recruit overall as the OSU coaches scour the west for talented preferred walk-on prospects.
Eric has good strength with some thickness to his frame. He has a simple and athletic motion with a long levered loose and easy arm action from a 3/4 arm slot. Eric throws 3 quality pitches beginning with a lively fastball that has a lot of armside run at 88-91 mph and will touch 92. He throws a hard, tight slider that bites at 77-78 mph. His changeup is a quality pitch with late run and dive action which is hard on the leftys.
Eric only played 5 games in his Covid shortened freshman year but played a 19 game season last year as a Sophomore. To date, he's pitched 39 2/3 innings, walking only 9 batters and hitting 2. He's punched out 65 opposing hitters or 1.6K/ IP. Soledad's record over those 24 games is 14-10. Segura has played travel team ball for the Aztec Baseball Club, the Salinas Diablos Baseball and the Trosky National Team.
His coach says, Eric is is the perfect teammate and carries a weighted 4.5 GPA (4.0 with extra points for Honors and Advanced Placement classes).

California Publics generally operate on a 4.0 system. Taking an Advanced Placement class and scoring a grade of "3"or better on a 1-5 scale gives you addition GPA credit because AP classes with a final score of 3-5 also earn you college credits. AP classes are considered college level courses.
Some private Univesities, Stanford being one, calculate their own GPA from an applicant's high school transcript. The modified GPA is usually based on only the 14 core subject classes, plus AP classes. Honors classes are somtimes also considered. Not uncommon to see a 4.5 revised to 3.5 or 3.6.
I may be a liitle behind on some of that, it's been a while but that is what I recall.
