In another thread a poster asked for specific solutions to improving the team's performance.
SR has a conservative philosophy of basketball similar to the style Tony Bennett uses at Virginia, a deliberate half-court offense and a sagging person to person defense or what is also referred to as a Pac Line defense where the person with the ball is defended but everyone else sags off their person and plays help. Both SR and Bennett have proven you can win this way if you have the right players.
However, it is pretty much coaching 101 that when your down double digits in the 4th quarter you need to come out of this type of defense and start pressuring the ball and get into the passing lanes to try and force turnovers and tempo. Instead, SR sits back in either a sagging man or zone defense to the bitter end. I find this frustrating as a fan and if I was a player, I would find it even more frustrating. Although I am sure SR doesn't see it this way, imo it can send a message that you are conceding.
It is the equivalent in football of being down a couple of touchdowns late in the game and continuously running the ball between the tackles. Hopefully SR and his staff address this in their post season self-scout. Assuming they do one.

One thing I observed alot this year is our defenders could not close on the shooters we were guarding which led to way to many uncontested three pointers and mid range shots. Our league is beginning to see a lot of fast players who can pull up on a dime and can shoots which was why we lost to ASU. That left hand girl is a well known commodity now. It will be interesting to see Wednesday just what Rueck plans to do to stop her defensively. He has to do something or we lose. Does he have a player who can actually shadow her. But the only one I can think of is AJ. If we have a player like Stanford has in Wilson who you can go to strictly to shadow a person. I was very impressed with how Colorado shot and defended. So much of that game there were to many uncontested shots by our defense that led to scores. This concerns me going forward.
