D-1 Baseball has identified those they consider to be the Top-150 college pitchers in the nation. Their rankings would suggest Beaver hitters will face 14 of the best 147 pitchers in the country over our regular season schedule. OSU's 3 fronline starters all made the list, hence the 147 number. These are the guys our Beaver batsmen need to "bone their bats" for in the coming weeks.
#10 Josh White - Cal. 5-3/ 2.79 with 61 1/3 IP, 81K and 25BB #23 Gabe Hughes - Gonzaga. 4-3/ 3.23 with 61 1/3 IP, 67K and 30BB #27 J.T. Nichols - Arizona. 6-3/ 4.77 with 60 1/3 IP, 66K and 31 BB #35 Alex Williams - Stanford. 5-2/ 3.42 with 55 1/3 IP, 72K and 29BB #46 Luis Ramirez - Long Beach State. 4-4/ 4.27 with 65 1/3 IP, 58K and 25 BB #59 Adam Maier - oregon. No Stats. Transferred from University of British Columbia, eh? #62 Jared Karos - UCLA. 2-1/ 3.33 with 27 IP, 32K and 5BB #68 Max Rajcic - UCLA. 2-1/ 1.65 with 32 2/3 IP, 36K and 8BB #69 Andrew Masiello - oregon. 39 1/3 IP, 52K and 8BB #96 Nick Pinto - UC-Irvine. 7-4/ 3.43, with 86 2/3 IP, 79K and 26BB #109 Isaac Esqueda - USC. 6-3/ 3.40 with 87 IP, 73K and 32BB #110 Isaac Ayon - oregon.. 2-1/ 5.21 with 38 IP, 44K and 15BB #131 Garret Irvin - Arizona. 6-4/ 4.59 with 88 1/3 IP, 75K and 35BB #150 Carter Young - Grand Canyon U. 7-1/ 2.77 with 68 1/3 IP, 59K and 27BB
A question for the audience: How many of the 14 ranked pitchers will last 5 innings against the Beaver onslaught ? Hughes will be first up in Surprise.
*** The Beaver rankingswere;
#26 Cooper Hjerpe. 3-6/ 4.21 with 77 IP, 98K and 27BB #57 Will Frisch. 3-0/ 2.38 with 56 2/3 IP, 54K and 24BB #70 Jake Pfennigs. 5-0/ 3.24 with 58 1/3 IP, 50K and 19BB

What makes you think he said Hughes won't pitch on Friday? He listed him as one we will face

I reserve the right to watch at least one batting order have a go at the plate first

Definitely excited to see this season get underway......that being said.....I like the idea of seeing the first rotation of the Beavs batting order and then I’ll take my chances....

To clarify: Hughes is the only Gonzaga pitcher on the Top-150. "First up" meant he will be the first guy on that list we may see. It is irrelevant whether we see him on Saturday or Sunday. He's their ace, I assume we will see him in one of the two games against the Zags.
We won't see another T-150 pitcher until the UCI series starts on March 4.

Depending on coaching philosophy, pitch count limits, staffing, etc most likely many starters aren't going much more than 4-5 innings early on.

I don't expect to see ny pitchers (OSU or opponent) extended until the 9th game when we host the UCI series. You might consider the Arizona trip as an evaluation period for some, not all, of our young and new pitchers.
Ramping up your staff is a process - not to be hurried.

Well, at least 3 of them will get blasted out of the game quickly. Interestingly, all three wear green and yellow. FTD

I do not see this Beaver team lacking offense. Too many returning bats, power in the right spots, speed on the paths. and some grinders. It’s a long way through this lineup. I don’t see anyone going 5 against the Beavs early. I’m conference and mid-season on, we may see some. There’s four guys that should be .900 or better OPS, maybe even 5 and a couple who may end over 1. The team averse OPS should be high, sign of a good offense. Other than catcher which is an unknown, there should be a quality hitter available at every spot. My biggest hope offensively is that this team does not take many 3 or 4 pitch Ks. Claunch, Casey and Ober especially could really be easy outs. Canham also doesn’t seem to employ, run up pitch counts offenses.

I don't think we have a returner that played in all 30 Pac12 games. Only two that played in 20-25+ hit .300+. Plus Claunch was clutch in conference play. He's a huge loss at this stage without seeing how others end up performing.

I wanna borrow from an OSU player in the Show and hope they all get the nick-name (pun intended) "Two Strikes". cut our K's in half (and walk half as many batters) from last season and we are in Omaha.
