I use to try them. In the NY Times they get progressively more difficult starting at easy on Monday to nearly impossible on Saturday. Sunday's puzzle is much larger but normally a Wednesday or Thursday difficulty level.

The one above I did randomly from the archives and was surprised by the OSU clue. |

I got better when I was doing them on a regular basis but Friday and Saturday, OMG. I may have well as been trying to dunk and then run a sub-four mile. |

I still do the NYT crosswords that show up in the hard copy of the Oregonian - (or should I say, the 4x weekly poo bag delivery).
Friday & Saturday, I usually can finish with some help from my wife, and some time to mull it over. Sometimes, I come back to a puzzle over a few days before finishing it. Get a new perspective, think of something I hadn't before.
I can say that I never look up answers on the internet, as I believe that is cheating - if I get stuck on one, I just quit.
A few weeks ago, I finished a NYT Saturday puzzle all on my own in one sitting, which I think is the first time I had done that before. As a "math" guy, I feel like the crossword makes other parts of my brain work that I don't use as often.
