As a known curmudgeon and hater of most things, it's my duty to bring this topic up and "get the ball rolling." Some idiot, somewhere coined a phrase and now announcers, commentators, and writers parrot them to sound like they are knowledgeable about the sport.
Sport: "phrase" - Example. Comment.
Basketball: "score the ball"- "Ja Morant can really score the ball." Please stop. It's simply score.
I have some others, but let's start here...

I hate that one. Unless, the guy jumped 20 feet in the air and actually caught the ball at its highest point. Football: "high pointed"- The receiver high pointed the football. "In the NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE"
I don't know why this is a thing with every NFL talking head. No one says "In the PROFESSIONAL GOLFERS' ASSOCIATION"
Honorable mention: he's a competitor/loves to compete

When an announcer says, "This Dallas Cowboys defense" or "This Tampa Bay offense." As opposed to the other defense Dallas keeps on the sideline? Or as opposed to the other Tampa Bay offense in the locker room?
Or "The Washington Football Team." Just call it Washington.

Football old: “Sneaky fast!” Translation: Slow, but good.
Football new: “Line to gain.” Replacing First Down. Looks short of the line to gain.

Benny's House- "defending mediocrity"
I know it's not a sport, but it still drives me nuts.

"Unanswered points."
It can be used correctly, but it often is not.
It is unanswered, when the other team never scores again.
It is not "unanswered," when the other team actually answers with a score of their own.
They might be "straight points" or "consecutive points." There are a lot of ways to phrase it that actually makes sense. But it is often gobbledygook nonsense.
Calling end arounds "sweeps" also bothers me.

Pretentious baseball announcers who say RBI when they mean RBIs. They think it makes them sound smart. Quite the opposite.
1 RBI 20 RBIs
Mike Parker, thankfully, gets it right.

"That hole was as wide open as Susie's legs......" "Color commentator" Duffy Daugherty, SOMETIME in the 70s...I think. And, NO..... I didn't hate it! Duffy MAY have been sippin' the Jameson's that day......

Benny's House- "defending mediocrity" I know it's not a sport, but it still drives me nuts. Come on Judge, everyone knows that you’re a pain in the ass. But we’ll always defend your right to be so. That’s what friends are for! I'll defend his mediocrity til the end of Benny's House!
