As Baseball America and other college baseball pundits have noted, there is no shortage of exceptional high school baseball players in the Oregon State recruiting class of 2022. Dallas Macias, a 6'1" 192 pound athlete from Aurora, Colorado's Regis-Jesuit Prep School (enrollment 1,700) is a member of the class. Macias is a multi-sport athlete that has excelled on the gridiron and diamond for 3 years for the Class 5A Raiders of Regis-Jesuit. An excellent student that was sought by some of the nation's best collegiate baseball programs. Dallas committed early to the Beavers and in spite of a favorable MLB Draft prospectus, is expected to join his teammates in Corvallis this summer. He has his Senior season in front of him this spring beginning with an opening date of March 23rd against Denver's Mullen Prep. He competes in Colorado's toughest prep league, the 10 team Continental 4A/5A. OSU outfielder Justin Boyd played at Parker's Legend HS, also a member of that league.
As a junior in the 17 game covid-cancel shortened season, Dallas was 27-55 with 4 doubles, 1 triple and 4 home runs. He recorded 17 runs and 15 rbi. He drew 8 bb, struck out 7 times and pilfered 8 bases. His impressive slash lines were .491/ .547/ .818 with an OPS of 1,365. All League and All State honors followed that performance. The 2020 season was cancelled and in 2019, Regis won the Colorado state championship with a 25-6 record. They didn't get to defend their title.
In a Pandemic shotened football career, Dallas made 226 tackles (121 solo, 105 assisted) from his safety position with 7 interceptions, 17 deflections, 3 blocked kicks and 3 fumble recoveries. He also played as a wide receiver (70 career receptions) and returned punts.
Macias is one of 60 elite baseball players chosen nationally every year to participate in the Prep Baseball Report "Super 60" event. It consists of tests and measurements and an extensive skills combine. Macias had 3 days of demonstrating his skills in front of coaches and scouts. His performance was "A" grade. He ran sub-7 60's with his laser timed trial at 6.94. In the infield drills, his range was wide, and footwoork was quick and twitchy, showing excellent fundamental glove work and quickness making the pivot. The athleticism was on display all afternoon during the fielding drills. He punctuated the footwork by rocketing throws across the diamond at 85 mph - top tier among the IF group. This performance was similar to his show-out with the Reds Area Code Games a year ago. Scouts say, "he has a real feel for the game".
When the hitting starts is when Macias lights up the yard. With a smart, disciplined middle of the field approach, he begins barreling balls at an 80% rate (Barrel = minimum 96 mph velo with minimum 27 degree launch angle). Hard hit line drives peppered the field mixed with several 365' shots into the bleachers. Dallas has a textbook swing, no wasted motion, quick and rhythmic load with good extension and hard contact. Strong lower body power and fast hands (24.7 mph), bat speed of 80 mph with a 100.6 mph exit velo. I will opine, I think this is an exceptional high school bat with HR power that will patrol the outfield for Oregon State. I love this swing and the hard contact, I think it needs to be in the lineup everyday.
I should mention he was a top tier pitching prospect through his sophomore year and still takes his turn on the mound for the Raiders. He touches 90 and has good stuff. No matter, it's all about the hit tool with Dallas.
