USC's two safeties were:
Mark "Aircraft" Carrier (Jim Thorpe Award Winner and Unanimous All-American) Cleveland "Cadillac" Colter (All-American)
Chris Hale and Ernest Spears were the corners. Both were drafted in the first 10 rounds of the draft.
Junior Seau was the Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year.
Good defense, too. Oregon State's D was not much resistance against USC's O, though. At the end, the Trojans turn on the afterburners.

You guys are newbe"s. I go back to Joe Francis as a single wing tailback and Nub Beamer running a fullback spinner series. What people forget is that during the Prothero years Oregon State was the winningest football team west of the Mississippi River!

I remember Phil Ross at tight end leveling a USC defender on a catch over the middle. Maybe. Dunno, even games watched in person back then are remembered in B&W.

What people forget is that during the Prothero years Oregon State was the winningest football team west of the Mississippi River! Very Impressive because Joe Francis graduated after the 1957 season. Arizona State was the winningest football team West of the Mississippi River from 1955-1964. Oklahoma was second. Six other teams west of the Mississippi River also won more games than Oregon State from 1955-1964: Arkansas, Fresno State, Louisiana State, Louisiana Tech, Texas and Wyoming. Iowa did not have more wins but had a better winning percentage than Oregon State: .632 v. .627. Oh c’mon…. Don’t pea on the fishers Cheerios….. lol

Sometime in that game (I think) USC receiver Eric Althoffer (sp?) barfs on the field.
Those guys wore huge shoulder pads.

I watched 1988 USC @ Oregon State and then the games this weekend, and the difference was very noticeable. The hip pads! Crazy!

I remember how cool is was to use pull up basketball type knee pads instead. *yeah... basketball knee pads! Lol

Found a game vs USC from 1988 on Youtube. Will give you an idea of what they ran: I was at that game and never forget several great play by Ross and Thomas. A couple of turnovers have killed some scores.

Yes…… I remember, and was THERE. Hated most of it. Gimmick offense. Crappy, undersized defense. Absolutely NO administrative support. In fact; NEGATIVE support. Wilhelm was tougher than old leather. Respect. Watching most of those games was an abomination. Just like, Fertig, Avezzano, Pettibone……and Andersen. A monumental waste of…….. YOU NAME IT! Riley1….Erickson…..Riley2, and, now Smith……. Although, not perfection….., RESPECTABILITY.

Kragthorpe almost turned the corner into competiveness but fell off a cliff in 1990. Probably due to Robb Thomas going on to the NFL.

Although, not perfection….., RESPECTABILITY. I do not remember the era very well, but Oregon State was rotten from the top at the time. President John V. Byrne forced Andros out to hire Kragthorpe over Andros' choice of Dennis Erickson. Then, Byrne hired Lynn Snyder, and Snyder tanked basketball. Things started to turn around with the hiring of Dutch Baughman. Baughman was unable to fix the basketball program, but hired Pat Casey and then Mike Riley before people began to attack him for not fixing everything fast enough. Baughman is famous at Virginia Tech for hiring Frank Beamer and turning a moribund program into the consistently competitive program that it is today. Baughman started the build of Oregon State baseball and the rebuild of Oregon State football, as well.

Baughman wanted to hire Rocky Long, and told the players that Long was going to be their new head coach. He was overruled, and Riley was hired instead, although Baughman almost screwed that one up. A news conference was called and set up, but then cancelled at the last minute when they could not reach satisfactory terms. Riley returned to USC, not sure if he was going to take the job.
Fortunately, that was eventually ironed out but Riley never signed a contract while Baughman was AD. Baughman was essentially fired in the spring of 1997; coincidentally his last day as AD was also the day the new, upgraded Valley Football Center was opened to the public for inspection. Riley did not sign his contract until interim AD Lee Schroeder took over.
For all intents and purposes, Jack Riley hired Pat Casey, just as in reality Casey hired Mitch Canham.
