Since I didn’t see the game live, I can’t add to the discussion. I’ve dreaded that the Beavs would get eliminated by PKs when the tournament started, and it happened. Two other quarterfinal matches went PK to end, and Pittsburgh and West Virginia know what it’s like. Now, maybe we can get an Oregon State firm developed. PKs reduces the game to one of chance. Period. Very little skill required. Goalie just has to guess right. Otherwise, the game was in OSU's hands, but we just couldn't finish the deal. Tough match, tough calls, tough result.

I will be honest I rarely am interested in soccer. The only reason I have cared a bit this year is the Beavs have a very good team. However, flailing on the field as if your leg was amputated without anesthesia is just too much. And it happens on whatever teams are playing. For that reason alone its unwatchable. Flopping happens in many sports. Sell the personal foul in basketball. Sell the hold in football. Sell the hit by pitch in baseball. Any sport which is regulated by human officials has its own form of flopping. Players know it and some train to take advantage of it. Soccer is a blast to watch though. It's a shame that the college games aren't broadcasted more frequently. I hope OSU continues to grow and the fans continue to support the team! It would be fun to see OSU become a dominant soccer team!

It's SO over-the-top, not as bad in NCAA games as it is in the big European leagues, but it's beyond a caricature of itself. There's no other sport where you see a guy act like he's just been shot by a sniper and then gets up 5 seconds later as if nothing happened - multiple times a game if you're lucky! Comparing soccer flopping to any other sport is - just no. There's no comparison.

Huskies down Georgetown, 2-1. Hey Messi, you are the resident soccer expert. I was watching the Timber game today and I have two observations/queations. 1) Why don't they go sudden death like hockey? Players get tired and someone will score. 2) Have they ever considered having an alternate PK distance for OT to give the goalie the advantage? I think it would be more compelling to give the goalie an advantage in a shootout so that it's on the offense to be more precise. I don't mind a penalty kick from the current distance because it's a 'penalty' kick.

I think it would be more compelling to give the goalie an advantage in a shootout so that it's on the offense to be more precise. I don't mind a penalty kick from the current distance because it's a 'penalty' kick. 1. The golden goal rule resulted in teams playing too conservative and defensive in OT, so FIFA and the other governing bodies scrapped it altogether in 2002.
2. In the early years of MLS, there was an Americanized version of the PK shootout that was used during the regular season as well as the playoffs. It involved one player starting 35 yards away from the goal, and he had 5 seconds to dribble and score a goal. He also could only touch the ball three times during his attack. Now the keeper, starting the round standing the goal line, could come out and stop the shot within the 18 yard penalty area. But the purists of the game didn't like this alternative approach and wanted MLS to be more in line with the game as it was played in the rest of the world.
