Bo Pelini. Shouldn't have got rid of him to begin with. He never won fewer than 9 games and that wasn't good enough. I mean, I'm aware he's a prick, but he was the best they had for a long time. Why stop there? Go with Frank Solich. Same 10 win seasons without the total A-hole component. He’s available after retiring from his 2nd HC job at Ohio U! And he’s only 77! Solich's 58 wins during his first six seasons as Nebraska's head coach exceeded those of his predecessors, Bob Devaney (53 wins) and Osborne (55 wins), both of whom are in the College Football Hall of Fame.[2] Well, Pelini is only like 55, so he could actually still coach. Either way, they won't hire either, and the will continue to be mediocre.

Banker changed Nebraska’s D and in year 2 it was a top 30 Total Defense. Gotta go back to 2010 to find a ranking that high or higher. He was rewarded with the AD forcing Riley to fire him for Diaco, who not only took Nebraska’s D to a 101 ranking but has managed to get himself canned at 4-5 schools since. Banker was not a problem. Riley was the problem. Turned a 9+ win program into a 6 win program. I know I know, he just needed a couple of more seasons to turn things back around. The AD turned Nebraska into a 6 win program when he forced Riley to fire Banker. With Banker, Riley had retooled a running team into at team with a modern offense, retooled the defense, and was 9 and 4, and beat teams ranked 8,10,15,19,20 and 21 while losing to #7 in OT. After firing Banker he had a top 3-5 recruiting class going until it was shown the AD's boytoy Diaco couldn't run a defense.

One of the guys Frost fired was Matt Lubick. Lubick coached the DB's under Dennis Erickson at Oregon State in 1999-2000.

Frost was 12-0 at Central Florida and nationally ranked before taking the Nebraska job.
Riley isn't a bad coach, he made two two mistakes at Nebraska, first he took some OSU assistants (Cavanaugh, Banker, etc) that weren't ready for that level and second, he continued to recruit like he was still at OSU with 2 and 3 star talent.
Nebraska fans are myopic. They feel entitled to the lofty staus that Devaney and Osborne accomplished. Osborne alledgedly played Felons, Lawrence Phillips, Thunder Collins, etc. The team GPA was something like 1.9
Now a graveyard for coaches, Solich, Riley, Frost?

At a school with relaxed academic admission standards smack dab in the center of the most fertile recruiting ground in America. Then? Welcome to Nebraska.

Riley actually landed a fair amount of 4 star talent at Nebraska and what was looking like a top 5-10 class before the Diaco disaster unfolded. thespun.com/college-football/recruiting-expert-praising-nebraskas-vision-under-mike-riley

Scott Frost's quote after firing 4 assistants:
"I took this job because I love Nebraska and I love this university," Frost said. "It would break my heart to think we made the improvements we have and gotten it so close in so many games and not get an opportunity to see it through. So it's an easy decision to make any sacrifices I have to to have the privilege to continue to be here."

After firing Banker he had a top 3-5 recruiting class going until it was shown the AD's boytoy Diaco couldn't run a defense. The issue was that the AD hired Riley and the boosters didn't like it. Riley wasn't good enough for a program with the clout of Nebraska. From basically day one, the AD was under pressure to can him. The Bob Diaco fiasco is proof, so is the fact that Nebraska essentially installed a GM over him, to make sure he was recruiting appropriate Nebraska quality players... which as it turns out do not include Pro Passing QBs and you are obligated under pain of termination to recruit Option QBs. I am glad Nebraska is in the s%#tter. Absolute weasel treatment of a quality coach. If he doesn't got it, fine, but let the man coach on his own terms and if he can't deliver so be it. Nebraska never did.

One also has to consider the Wunderkind that the AD had a crush on, Diaco, was 11-26 at UCONN previously only had one decent stint at Notre Dame and since being canned by Nebraska has gone on to fail everywhere else. He lasted one season as Purdue's DC, gave up 30 points per game and was fired. Next DC has Purdue giving up 20 points per game.
It was a bizarre head scratching mountain to die on. and everybody, in the end, did in fact die.

It’s crazy to me that some people still can’t see that Riley ran both this program and Nebraska into the ground, leaving both in ashes. Both programs made a hiring mistake afterward that led to continued misery, but Mike Riley is the common thread. These are the types of REALLY bad takes that make me pine for a thumbs down button on this message board. I'd say most coaches who "run a program into the ground" don't leave their successor with 3 D-I starting QBs on the roster. It's really hard to even comprehend the (il)logic it took to make this post.

Once an opinion takes hold, no amount of evidence will shake some people off of it.
Like say...."Nike overturned the targeting call on McKinley."
