The Beavers solidify their 2024 infield group with the addition of a 3B/RHP from southern California's San Fernando Valley.
PAUL VASQUEZ 6-3, 200 WEST COVINA, CA. - SOUTH HILLS HS.
Beginning his Sophomore year in high school, Vasquez has a solid athletic frame that projects greater physical gains in the coming years. He is a consistent hitter that hits the ball hard to all fields. His power projection is very appealing - a middle of the order hitter. He is also a promising pitcher and pitched in varsity competition as a HS freshman. He played his freshman year at San Dimas HS and started all 25 games in 2021. He has transferred to CIF powerhouse, South Hills HS in West Covina and will play Head Coach Davey Murphy. South Hills plays in the Division 1, highly competitive Hacienda League.
Paul has played on the prestgious Alpha Prime Travel Team at the 14u and 15u levels and has made 5 All Tournament teams in national events including the WWBC and Perfect Game World Series events.
His freshman stats at San Dimas HS are eye catching. At the plate he was 23-68 and a .338 BA. He scored 18 runs, drove home 16 runs, had 5 doubles and a home run, drew 15 walks, was plunked 3 times and struck out 9 times. He was 1/2 on SBA, and posted slash lines of .338/ .471/ .455. On the mound, he appeared in 8 games, started 2 and had a save. His W-L was 1-1 with a 1.37 ERA in 15 2/3 IP. Opposing batters hit .193, he allowed 6 runs with 3 unearned, struck out 15, walked 8 and hit 2 batters. He has a three pitch arsenal and has touched 86/87 mph with his fastball, shows a breaking ball at 72 mph, and a change-up at 76 mph
Paul Vasquez is ranked #242 nationally and #32 in California by Prep Baseball Report. He is ranked # 282 nationally and #39 in California by Rawlings Perfect Game.

West Covina and San Dimas are in the San Gabriel Valley, not the San Fernando Valley. San Fernando is Burbank, Northridge, North Hollywood and others. West Covina won the American Legion World Series in something like 1971. (I'm not sure why I remember that.)

LOL - Yes, in the shadow of the San Gabriel Mountains. Geez, I'm losing it . . . or may have already lost it.
Just to give us an idea about how good the South Hills program is, (where Vasquez will hopefuly play his final 3 years of HS baseball) - process this:
Head Coach Davey Murphy has guided the Huskies program since 2014. His SHHS record at the CIF-Division 1 level is 162-58, and 76-24 in League play. His CIF playoff record is 8-5 and in 2016, his 26-7 team defeated Redlands-East Valley HS to win the CIF-Southern Section D-1 title.
His predecessor, Kevin Smith was 184-60, and 98-19 in League play over 9 seasons. Under Smith, SHHS reached the CIF final in 2008 with a 25-6 team, losing to Sherman Oaks-Notre Dame. In 2009, South Hills with a 24-8 record, won the CIF SS championship defeating Irvine-Beckman HS in the final. In 2012, Smith's Husky team reached the CIF semi-finals, losing to Riverside-J.W. North HS.
Since the 2005 season, South Hills has compiled a 346-118 record, 174-43 in League play against some of the best competition in southern California. They have made the CIF playoffs 13 times, reaching the Final-4 four times, and have won two CIF- Southern Section championships. That's a big deal!
