Arizona is fertile recruiting ground for college baseball programs. With the 2022 NSD on the books, the tally for Arizona Division I signees is 45, with 25 players headed for Power-5 Conferences, including 20 to the PAC-12. The BIG-12 signed 4, SEC 1, MWC 4, WAC 14, and the WCC 2. In addition, another 20+ signed with small college and J.C. programs.
The Beavers have a presence in Arizona. Why? In the last 5 recruiting classes, Oregon State has signed 8 student-athletes from Arizona, including 2 this cycle. Arizona has a favorable baseball climate, kids play many games of "warm weather baseball". The high school and summer travel squads are well coached. The competition is good and plentyful. There is an abundance of college prospects every year.
This year, Oregon State recruited two top-10 players from Arizona, both outfielders with Gavin Turley and Easton Talt. Turley played his first two years of high school ball at Midway HS in Wasatch, Utah before transferring to Hamilton HS in Chandler. Talt played his first two years at Cascade HS in Everett, Washington before transferring to Sunrise Mountain HS in Peoria. Turley is the concensus number 1 player in Arizona, Tate is number 8 with Prep Baseball Report and number 9 with Perfect Game. Both were heavily recruited with Talt being committed to the University of Washington Huskies since his sophomore year.
Turley is a 5-tool player and currently #17 on Baseball America's top MLB high school draft prospect list for next summer's draft.
He is the Beaver's top recruit in this class. There has been volumes written about him and he's been widely discussed among Beaver fans. Talt was a late "conversion", so initiating a little discussion on him might be fun.
First, he's a ball player - he's played IF, OF, C and pitched some during his brief career. He has a wirey frame, good strength and athleticism . . . . and he's really fast. Measurables are 5'10 1/2", 172 pounds, can hit a baseball 375' and runs a 6.7 sixty. His immediate appeal is his ability to hit the baseball hard, frequently and for extra bases. His two years at Cascade he hit .533, .500, and .414 last year a Class 5A Sunrise Mountain. He is consistently between .400 and .500 in summer travel ball play. He is a frequent face on All Tournament teams in high profile summer showcase events. He also played for the Cincinnati Reds Area Code team.
His Stats last season for 24 games (2021) at Sunrise Mountain HS were; 29-70 and a .414 BA, scored 27 runs, had 19 RBI, hit 4 doubles, 2 triples and 2 homers. He stole 11 bases, walked 14 times, had 1 HBP, and struck out 10 times. His impressive slash lines as a junior were, .414/ .500/ .727 . He has pitched, throwing an 87-89 mph fastball, a sharp curve ball at 72 and has a change-up. He is looking forward to a monsterous senior year - the Sunrise Mountain Mustangs return many starters from an 18-6 team in 2021. I suspect he comes into the OSU program as an outfielder but with his quickness, arm, and athletic ability, I'm not sure.
An outstanding student with a 3.65 GPA, he plans on a Mathematics major at OSU.
