It's well-known that Rueck's teams have, on average, committed more turnovers than the opposition and it seems to just come with the style/system. It hasn't seemed to impede the program's success trajectory. Does anyone see any likelihood that the 2022 WBB team will substantially different in this regard than previous seasons under Rueck? Season | TO/G | Opp TO/G | TO Margin | Assist/TO | 2020-21 | 14.0 | 9.7 | -4.3 | 1.2 | 2019-20 | 14.2 | 9.9 | -4.3 | 1.2 | 2018-19 | 12.5 | 8.8 | -3.8 | 1.3 | 2017-18 | 14.2 | 8.9 | -5.3 | 1.3 | 2016-17 | 14.6 | 10.3 | -4.4 | 1.1 | 2015-16 | 15.3 | 10.5 | -4.8 | 1.0 | 2014-15 | 14.0 | 11.8 | -5.2 | 0.9 | 2013-14 | 16.2 | 11.0 | -4.2 | 0.7 | 2012-13 | 17.0 | 12.8 | -4.2 | 0.7 | 2011-12 | 15.7 | 16.4 | +0.7 | 0.9 | 2010-11 | 19.2 | 17.4 | -1.8 | 0.6 |

I don't see the team being that different in turnovers forced, unless our increased length results in a few more deflections. Even then, I think it the amount would be small. In reality, with the way OSU plays defense counting blocked shots that end possessions might be a better way to make the turnovers comparison.
Hopefully the goal is always to limit the number of turnovers offensively. I'd love to see us average under 10 for the season, however with a freshman at the point, I'm not sure how realistic that will be.

What stands out to me on the TO chart above is how our opponent's TO rate per game has gone steadily downhill over the years. When SR took this job he didn't have alot of offensive talent to work with so he won games with his trademark stifling defense which created TO's. But in recent years as his offensive talent has gotten much better I haven't seen much of that stifling defense and thus we are forcing fewer TO's. I would like to see more emphasis on getting back to his trademark stifling defense and then combining that with our current offensive talent would make us very tough to beat and also carry us in those games where the team is not shooting well!

My OSU view on these three stats are:
Turnovers - This is the area that can be improved. Just cut back on the unforced stuff and this stat can come down by 2-3 per game.
Opponent Turnovers - This number isn’t a focus. Sure, any coach likes it when the other team turns the ball over, but it’s not a focus for SR. His focus is to create a “turnover” by forcing teams into a low percentage shot, then getting the rebound (limiting them to only one shot.)
Assist to Turnover - I don’t see a real concern in this area. It can improve a little (by cutting TO’s back a little), but OSU is consistently in the Top 3 or 4 in the Pac-12 in the category. Not really an area of concern in my view.
Individual results have been strong the past couple of years.
2020 - Aleah led the conference in assists and was #2 in assist to turnover
2019 - Destiny/Mik were both in top 5 for assist and Destiny/Aleah were both in top 5 for assist to turnover
2018 - Wasn’t great as Destiny wasn’t in top 10 for either category
In summary - Eliminate (or minimize) that dumb, unforced turnovers. Otherwise, it’s all good.

When you're playing a weaker opponent, having 4 more turnovers per game isn't going to affect the final result. That's not the case when you're playing a tough conference opponent. You basically give them 4.3 more shot opportunities than you, they shoot 42% from the floor, that's 1.8 made baskets. With teams putting up so many 3's, that certainly translates to 4 points per game.
You want to spot Stanford 4 points? Just call the score 4-zip Stanford prior to the tip? No thanks.
And you can't go through the preseason schedule turning the ball over repeatedly and expect to dial it up a notch when conference play starts. Ain't gonna happen. It's an extension of the old saw that you play like you practice. So you have to work on this from day one before the first game.
On a different note, I know this board is strictly for women's basketball, so I heard a rumor that the women wanted to give a shout out to the men's soccer team for winning the PAC 12 championship.
