The Chicago Cubs were excited to land Chase Watkins in the 9th round of the 2021 MLB Draft - probably even more excited that they could sign him for $125k. In the Cub's draft, Baseball America had an interesting take on an even bigger bargain - OSU recruit Dominic Hambley, the flame-throwing Canadian from British Columbia. He may have signed for well below his projected market value.
Most Intriguing Background: Righthander Dominic Hambley (18) was one of five players drafted directly out of Canada in this draft class (there were other Canadians who transferred and were drafted out of other states in the US) and was committed to Oregon State, but the Cubs were able to sign him for $200,000 in the 18th round.
Slot value is only a starting point - especially in the middle rounds. Since 2014, OSU has lost Loehr, Oxvenad, Watson, Easley and Hambley to offers well above slot value.
