Now that we've seen the exhibition game, what does that tell us about future starters and the rotation?
Ellie outperformed Taya in the exhibition... should she start? Taya is a great defender, but Ellie was very good and fills the stat sheet better. I guess the question is, will she do it as the level of competition rises? Will Scott give her the opportunity to start next game?
Emily clearly deserves a starting role at this point. Greta and A.J. have potential and will develop, but right now there is a big gap. Greta's eight rebounds were a big positive and her D was very good... but she needs to close on her drives and hit more of her shots. A.J. was aggressive, but tried to do a little too much at times. I suspect Greta will be first off the bench for Emily, but there's a lot of uncertainty here.
Talia is clearly the top point guard and Tea the backup. Tea seemed to play with more risk taking on D, playing closer to the defender and risking fouls; she drives to the basket well, but did not produce like Talia did offensively.
Kennedy, while not doing a lot offensively, was a strong defender and rebounder. When she got the ball down low (which was not often enough) she did well. We need to get the ball to her more and hopefully her offensive production will rise to match her D and rebounding. Who backs her up? She played center, so Jelena and Jovanna are the candidates; no question Jelena gets in first.
Taylor had a good game and we seem to get the ball to her down low better than the other bigs. She also played good D and did not have foul problems. She was playing as a forward. Assuming we need a big line-up (not three-guard), Jelena seems to be the top backup here too.
If we need to go small, do we substitute Greta or AJ for Kennedy or Taya/Ellie ? It probably depends upon who they are matching up against.
Based upon the Exhibition game, Jovanna and Noelle should be last off the bench. Jovanna is a very good 3 point shooter (as is Noelle) but that didn't come out in the exhibition, where she primarily played down low. She could be a substitute at the Taya/Ellie spot, as well as at center or forward. Noelle surprisingly threw up an air-ball in her one shot in the exhibition. She pays a big price for being short and not especially fast or quick; her effectiveness on the perimeter is dependent upon matchups or defensive style that give her a better opportunity to be open for a shot. While she could back up at PG, I would think Scott would go with Greta if circumstances (injury or foul problems) forced him to find alternatives to Talia and Tea.
