A lot of us predicted the season's first starting line up - but I don't think a single poster on this board predicted that Emily would be in the starting five. I think most of us figured that if Greta didn't start then Tea would....We were all wrong on both counts.
From a coaches point of view, what does Emily bring to the team that would cause Coach to start her ahead of Greta and Tea??
I know it's early in the season. And nobody needs to remind me that it was an exhibition game. But I'm always intrigued when a player who no one expected gets the starting nod. Any guesses as to whether she will be a starter on Friday at Gill......
It's mainly a matter of curiosity to me - but there are a lot of pretty knowledgeable fans on this board and I don't think anyone saw Emily in the starting five. Comments or ideas? GO BEAVS!!

I'll just say SR uses multiple starting lineups early. With him it's less about who starts, but who finishes. Those are the young ladies he finds as the early season progresses.

I feel she played really well. Very good shooter can spot up or drive. Senior savy. Good passer. Sneaky good on defense. Would love to have seen her preinjury.

I certainly didn't expect her to start but after seeing her play I understand why she started. She brings a solid body and a good shot to the game. She also has the calmness that comes from years of college experience.

When asked what she brought to the game Emily mentioned rebounding. This is extremely important for the Beav's defense to work so among other things I'm sure this is a lot of help. Just hope her leg can take the pounding of being a starter.

While Greta showed good athleticism and rebounded well, he shots (other than one three) were just not falling. She seemed tentative on some shots and a bit rushed on others. She clearly has lots of potential, but isn’t ready to start. AJ too has good potential, but made freshman mistakes and needs to settle in a bit. Tea should back up Talia, but, based on the exhibition game, I think her defense needs to improve. Emily was solid in all respects and I don’t think any other guard is as qualified to start. Check out the highlight video I just posted in the Exhibition thread and you’ll see what I mean.

I was one that predicted Greta in the starting line up. I do think it will ultimately end up that way, but I underestimated the value that comes from an experienced senior (even at mid major level) over a freshman (all American.). Greta will get there, but it could be Emily’s (or Ellie’s) starting spot for a while.
Nice problem for Rueck to have. Looking forward to next Friday night.

Emily Codding the pride of the Santa Rosa Panthers, I thought she had a good game, seasoned, smart, great fundamentals, very good addition.

It was also obvious to me why she was starting.

I thought all along that Emily had a shot at starting, but I thought that shot would be at the '3' and would be between her and Ellie. Scott decided to go big, which a number of you predicted, but I didn't think would happen in game 1. To me Emily started because she is a solid threat all around. Good 3 point shooter with some aggressiveness and she can rebound. I will be interested in seeing how Emily does defensively once we get stronger competition.
The freshman did not look ready to me but I wouldn't count them out as starters later in the year. I really don't think this game showed us a lot because it looked obvious to me the team played down to the competition and didn't take them seriously.
Just a couple other thoughts: Kennedy is very good at passing inside to the bigs. Tea is a solid backup and can provide some scoring and leadership from the bench. Jelena did look better and has a lot of nice inside moves. I think we really need tougher competition to see how Jelena holds up against other bigs. I can't imagen she continues to have as many blocks as she did in this game, but would be thrilled if that were to be the case. The freshman have talent. Now they need experience.

It was also obvious to me why she was starting. She just seemed to have a nose for the ball and was involved in more than her share of plays on both offense and defense. I forgot to check the numbers of the players before watchng the game so I did not know who was who, but 23 seemed to be everywhere. Maybe it was just one game, but she really stood out to me. I only found out after the fact who she was. One other thing, I am way past due for my eye operations so I certanly hope the blond girls continue to sport different hair styles so I can tell who is who. This team certainly has a lot of blonds this season. As someone who has done his share of recording games, I thought those recordings were done really well. Although he might have hit the score board more often.

Try this: "Well 'scoreboard' is ONE WORD smarty pants!" See how he likes that!

My thoughts on the video. Showed Taylor still trying to figure out how to pivot her feet and use a drop step to the basket when her back is facing the basket. She doesn’t look like a natural post unless facing the rim. There has been plenty of time to work with her on drop step either side of the basket with a man behind her. I’m kinda surprised by this coaching issue. These are fundamentals for posts underneath a basket. Feel where the man is drop that way hook your elbow as you pivot use left or right hand. Tea is an interesting skill set. I watched her to see her strengths and weaknesses. She has God given speed quick and likes to attack the basket. Good arsenal. Not nessisarily a look to pass first Guard. Didn’t shoot at all outside not sure why. She will help bringing the ball up. Solid defense. Needs more time on the court to learn our system. Smart and confident good addition

She definitely needs to go to her left more often when it is available. Defenders always play Taylor to pivot to her right hand. I also like our new transfers, they will help us a lot this year with depth and experience.
