Mick was committed to Oregon State for 3 years. He wanted badly to be part of the OSU program and pitch for the Beavers. That situation changed when he was a mid-first round draft selection in 2021 by the Phillies. He drew raves during his pro debut in Clearwater. Baseball America recently had this to say about him with a little challenge for the Phillies Instructional group;
"The obvious star of the Phillies Arizona instructional league camp is righthander Mick Abel, who showed massive stuff at Low-A Clearwater in his pro debut, even if the numbers didn't always match the repertoire. His pure stuff looked every bit of a future top-of-the-rotation arm—now it's up to the team's player development group to help him achieve that ceiling."
