In order to appreciate Jonathan Smiths program development at OSU. I went to the official NCAA site to look at recruiting ratings for classes 19, 20,21 &22.
I do not believe the numbers capture JC’s or Transfers. This is just based on High School recruiting, year over year .
One thing that stuck out was the fact that we ZERO 5 star recruits and 1 4 star recruit, over these 4 years ! All of the rest are 3 stars !
Contrast that with Washington @ 31 4 stars and 2 5 stars in the same time period
Contrast that with USC @ 27 4 stars and 2 5 stars
Contrast that with WSU @ All 3 stars
Contrast that with Utah @ 13 4 stars
Contrast that with CAL @ 6 4 stars
Contrast that with Colorado @ 5. 4 stars
Contrast that with Stanford @ 23 4 stars
Contrast that with UCLA @ 12 4 stars
Contrast that with Arizona @ 3 4 stars
Contrast that with ASU @ 18 4 stars
Contrast that with uo @ 5 5 star and 48 4 stars
Obviously, this year , we are doing more with less. But, again, this does not capture the backstory on transfers, JC’s or different forms of casualties such as grades, injuries, dismissals, etc.
I am pretty impressed by getting to the current point after three full and one half seasons, under Smith.
Smith ‘seems’ to be after more 4-5 stars this recruiting cycle, but also seems to rely a lot on the transfer portal and some JC’s.
At the same time , he has successful experience at the position, and athletic size and speed - plus a ‘toughness’ at the forefront of his recruit
requirements. These would include under the radar guys, plus guys that you can obviously see taking a year or so of development ,
It is quite impressive to see his strategic development plan.
