I obviously don't know anything about softball. So I don't know all of the reasons for why this idea is stupid. But I do know that pitching absolutely dominates softball - to a much greater degree than in baseball.
If softball games were 9 innings (instead of 7) would that have any effect on the ability of star softball pitchers to pitch complete game after complete game after complete game? If it were a rule change that might introduce more relief pitching, it seems like it could somewhat lessen the dominance of star starting pitchers.
Or is that all just complete foolishness?

In my opinion softball needs some major changes but extending the length of the games is not one. The current athletes are so much stronger and faster than they were 40 years ago. The fields need to be extended, not just the outfield but also the bases and pitching mound. Every year players are seriously injured by balls hit hard. The fielders are so close they don't have enough reaction time to protect themselves.
Another issue is that mechanically the pitching motion is very easy on the arm so a team can ride a single pitcher game after game. A lot of examples can be found at the college level and also the Olympics.
There are other issues as well but the sport is a dead end, there is no real professional league to move onto.

Kids age 10-12 at the LLWS in Williamsport play on bigger fields than college softball.
