Oregon State's connection with Wisconsin pays off again. In 2017, the Beavers signed INF Zach Clayton (Oconomowoc), an all state tight end and promising baseball prospect that struggled with several serious injuries that prevented him from ever competing for playing time at OSU. They also signed RHP Nathan Burns (West Bend) in 2017, who is now toiling in the California Angels farm system. In 2019, RHP Jack Washburn (Webster) inked with OSU and recently transferred to Mississippi in search of more innings with the heavy hitting Rebels whose pitching staff is badly depleted.
Oregon State's latest recruit is Evan Gustafson from Eau Claire's Altoona high school. Altoona is a suburban school with 450 students. Evan has an athletic build at 6-2 and 185 and is a multi-position player, His primary positions are catcher and pitcher - he's also a very good third baseman. With Nevada catching standout Anthony Marnell already committed, are the coaches bringing in two catchers (EX: Wilson Weber and Tanner Smith) in the same class or is Gustavson the 9th pitcher to join the 2023 group and draft insurance for Carraway and possibly one other committed pitcher?
Gustavson's metrics are impressive; he's fast, he's recorded several 60 times in the 6.82 range. He's a left handed hitter with developing power and maxed last spring at 350' As a freshman at Altoona HS in 2020, he hit.449 with 17 XBH including 3 HR's. On the mound, he posted a 1.46 ERA. His velocity has made steady gains and last June, he was gunned at 85-87 with a sharp breaking curve at 72. His change up is at 76 mph. As a left handed hitting catcher with 96.25 mph exit velo, POP times ranging from 1.86 to 1.98 and behind the plate velocity of 82 mph, it's easy to understand why his primary focus hasn't been on the bump.
Evan was the Cloverbelt Conference Player of the Year as a freshman in 2021 and is a standout C-P for the GBR Rays elite travel team. He also played for the Cincinnati Reds Scout team 16u. He was named to the all tournament team this summer at the WWBA Northern championship in Marion, Indiana. He was also selected to play in the All State games in LaGrange, Il. The top-50 prospects from Illinois and Wisconsin play na week long series annually. Evan is currently ranked #6 in Wisconsin by PBR.
