So we read that the hospitals are getting overrun, there are limited or no ICU beds, and not enough resources to treat all the Covid patients. And where are all the massive facilities that were originally set up and never used? Massive tent towns, government and private buildings set up, medical ship provided to NYC all went unused. Why is there no action on setting up facilities like this is hard hit areas? (Other than the medical ship in Kansas of course.) Unused

My niece's hospital had a parking lot tent going, she was treating patients there back during the last big spike. Good Sam in Corvallis may not have a tent, but they have had no open ICU units most of the time the last several weeks as they are the catch basin for all other regional hospitals.

Why is there no action on setting up facilities like this is hard hit areas? (Other than the medical ship in Kansas of course.) UnusedOriginally, there was a concern about space. When we had less of an idea how communicable or debilitating or deadly COVID was, our government seemed to create the space to try and whether something awful. It turns out that that was unneeded. Socialized medicine countries (with generally higher population densities, to be fair) had problems with that, because they are not really set up for something like COVID-19. The USA, with a lot of usually unused medical space (because we have a free market healthcare system), did not need to dip into emergency overflow all that much. A lot of the emergency overflow medical facilities were ultimately repurposed into testing centers and then vaccination centers. Kentucky has the highest hospitalization rate in the country as of yesterday. They just added 200 more temporary ICU beds statewide (something like a 17% increase in ICU beds) and are considering adding more. As I understand it, the issue in Kentucky is staffing. Pretty much any bed can be an ICU bed but only if it is staffed to be an ICU bed. Otherwise, it is just a bed. West Virginia was second as of yesterday. But they are only now reaching the levels that they saw back in the main COVID-19 wave. And the data seems to indicate that case counts are decreasing in both Kentucky and West Virginia. The concern, though, is that hospitalizations could continue to rise because of the lag in hospitalizations after diagnosis. We'll see, I suppose.

I have heard that one of the biggest problems is the availability of staff (nurses) to work all the beds in the hospital so that a hospital’s availability of “beds” doesn’t necessarily mean physical beds but rather beds that can be served (so to speak) by the nurses and doctors available.
