Just as Fall Baseball is about to begin, Baseball America has issued their updated Top 25 Recruiting Classes of 2021.
PAC 12 Teams: UCLA #1, Beavs #6, USC #17, UW #24.
Reading through the five pitchers that are discussed, it's tantalizing to see top-end numbers in relation to four of them: "95", "98", "upper 90's", "97".
Kmatz is considered the Beavs top overall recruit. Article didn't even mention pitchers David Case or David Grewe.
Good discussion too re: Tyree Reed, Bazzana, Smith & Weber at (C), TJ Wheeler, etc....

BA keeps their analysis brief, many key recruits go unmentioned. They placed the primary emphasis on our pitching recruits. Looking at other class rankings, you will conclude that UCLA and Oregon State clearly had the best classes in the PAC-12. I am pleasantly surprised that SEC-centric Baseball America ranked two west coast teams in the top-6 nationally. Will wonders never cease.
Rawlings Perfect Game hasn't issued their final rankings but about a month ago also had UCLA and the Beavers with the best class rankings in the PAC-12. Here are their PAC-12 rankings by national rank.
# 4 UCLA # 17 Oregon State # 34 USC # 38 UW # 39 Stanford # 43 Oregon # 46 Arizona # 58 Utah # 61 ASU # 89 WSU # 101 Cal

It is a deep class because it's a large class by OSU standards. If everyone showed up today, we have 20 recruits in this class.
14 High School recruits 4 transfers from Junior College 2 transfers from 4-year programs.
If you break it down by position, and that is always subject to change once they are in the Beaver program, it looks like this.
10 Pitchers 2 Catchers 6 Infielders 2 Outfielders

Kmatz won't overpower hitters with his fastball, he is a consistent 90-92 and nearly identical to where Kevin Abel was coming out of high school. More importantly his fastball has good life and thus, it plays up.
What Kmatz does have that few prep pitchers have, is command of four very effective pitches. His slider, curve and change-up are all swing and miss pitches.
Kmatz throws strikes, with any pitch on any count. His K:BB ratio is outstanding.
At 6-3 1/2" 214 pounds, Jacob Kmatz is plug and play for the Beaver coaching staff.

Why was OSU's 2021 recruiting class ranked number 6 nationally? First, Baseball America liked our class, it was big, deep, balanced and had 7 players nationally ranked. The three most prominent group of prep analysts producing class rankings are with Baseball America, Prep Baseball Report and Rawlings-Perfect Game. Baseball America does not publish player rankings beyond a select group while the other two publish frequently updated National Top-500 rankings for each class.
Individually, how were seven Beaver recruits ranked with PBR and RPG ?
PREP BASEBALL REPORT No. 38 Reed OF No. 121 Kmatz RHP No. 150 Guerra INF No, 225 Trosky INF No. 300 Smith C No. 319 Quinn RHP No. 456 Weber C
RAWLINGS-PERFECT GAME No. 58 Reed No. 159 Trosky No. 198 Guerra No. 287 Weber No. 289 Quinn No. 370 Kmatz No. 396 Smith
*** NOTE: RHP Dominic Hambey was our 8th nationally ranked player. He was ranked No. 269 by PBR and No. 386 by RPG. He was drafted and signed with the Chicago Cubs.
