Your article is more than a year old. They still have not picked a new name. Just no name. They stopped putting Clan on their uniforms awhile ago, even before they started trying to figure out whether to change names. Is this a stupid black student-athlete or one with two brain cells to rub together? Because you seem to be implying that this black student athlete is a complete moron. I would hope that black student-athletes are not as lazily stupid and uninformed as you are making them out to be. At some point, common sense is going to win out over hysterical ignorance and stupidity. Or all of North America will quickly sink into an Idiocracy. My grandmother was a proud descendent of Clan Maguire. I married a proud descendent of Clan MacBain. Conflating the Gaelic Clans with the Ku Klux Klan is just so lazily and willfully stupid and ignorant and wildly offensive to pretty much everyone that it defies both logic and words. Not terribly surprising. Sad? Offensive to pretty much everyone and in almost every way? An indictment of the Canadian education system? Absolutely to all three rhetorical questions. But not terribly surprising.

So obviously there needs to be proper education and marketing. That the university failed to educate their athletes suggests that maybe a more modern name change and image change is what they really wanted.

Not terribly surprising. Sad? Offensive to pretty much everyone and in almost every way? An indictment of the Canadian education system? Absolutely to all three rhetorical questions. But not terribly surprising. There is a reason they changed the name of Rapeseed Oil to Canola Oil. And it’s not because that innocent little seed ever sexually assaulted anyone. it’s because from a marketing standpoint you just don’t want your product associated with that. In the end it came down to a simple marketing decision. Yes, Clan and Klan are spelled differently and have different meanings. However, I read that a student survey taken around the time of the change recorded +90% student approval of discontinuing the Clan mascot. The university leadership had a choice whether to change the mascot that in a more diverse cultural environment carries stronger negative associations, or stick with it and take the hit. In the end it wasn’t worth the trouble. After all what is a mascot? - a marketing tool. Nothing more, nothing less. . There are literally hundreds of other mascots that would not be objectionable. BTW, I have Scottish heritage too (Montgomery). Thankfully, my ability to empathize and understand is not bound to my own heritage. PS. “lazy” and “stupid” are your words, not mine.

If they want to continue with a mascot that honors the heritage of their name sake, they could decide to change their name to the Highlanders or to the Scots or to the Gael’s like Saint Mary’s. None of those choices would be nearly as loaded. I will trust them to do what’s best for their university in the context of their society and culture.

Sounds very similar to the arguments used around Native American mascot names. “Why be offended, you are actually being honored.” It doesn’t matter what you, the affected people think, we just need to educate you more. How did those discussions go.(rhetorical)

Sounds very similar to the arguments used around Native American mascot names. “Why be offended, you are actually being honored.” It doesn’t matter what you, the affected people think, we just need to educate you more. How did those discussions go.(rhetorical) I re-read my post and I see how you got confused. Sorry about that. The main difference, which really is quite clear, is that unlike the Native American mascots, the Scots seemingly don't take offense at the mascot. Those who find it offensive are not of Scottish descent. Make sense? Native Americans clearly were offended by "Redskins" and "Indians." In these cases and others like them, keeping the mascot name is a power trip. "We know you don't like it, but suck it. We're keeping it." In this case, the name represents Scottish culture. Its resemblance to a notorious hate group makes it uncomfortable for those without Scottish heritage. So the school can either keep the name and do massive education/marketing to try to salvage it, or simply change it. As we've seen with different iterations of Benny Beaver, a mascot change can bring in a lot of cash, which is why I think they'll choose a new name.

Actually Highlanders would be a terrific nickname for Simon Fraser. If you are familiar with the setting of the University it is located on top of Burnaby Mountain.
