pac-12.com/article/2021/08/25/pac-12-announces-creation-pac-12-baseball-tournament-partnership-city-scottsdaleThe Pac-12 announced today the creation of a Conference championship event for baseball in partnership with the City of Scottsdale and The Arizona Sports & Entertainment Commission. The inaugural Pac-12 Baseball Tournament is scheduled for May 25-29, 2022 at Scottsdale Stadium. “The Pac-12 Baseball Tournament is a marquee event that will serve to enhance the exposure of the Conference’s baseball programs with competitive, late-season matchups prior to NCAA Tournament selections,” Pac-12 Commissioner George Kliavkoff said. The double-elimination tournament will be spread over five days at the Spring Training home of the San Francisco Giants. The top eight teams in the Conference standings at the conclusion of the regular season will earn berths in the Pac-12 Baseball Tournament, from which the champion will receive the Conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Pac-12’s initial agreement with the City of Scottsdale runs through 2024.

So what does this do to the regular season - and do the coaches like the idea of a double elimination 8 team tournament right before the regionals? That's a big load on a pitching staff.

With normal highs near 100 degrees that should be fun for everyone.

I hope they are all night games. That time of year the people that live there head for the air conditioning. I can't imagine sitting or playing through a game in 100 degree heat.

On the other hand.....it'll get the kids bodies acclimated for Omaha in June, which can be miserably hot.

They should seriously consider rotating it between: Seattle - Husky Ballpark/T-Mobile Corvallis/Eugene Berkeley/Stanford Los Angeles - some combo of USC/UCLA and Dodger Stadium And leave the 100+ late May weather to the cacti.

So what does this do to the regular season - and do the coaches like the idea of a double elimination 8 team tournament right before the regionals? That's a big load on a pitching staff. NC State played in four games in four days at the ACC Tournament, losing the Championship Game to Duke. Tennessee played in four games in four days at the SEC Tournament, losing to Florida in the Semifinal. Texas played in four games in four days at the Big 12 Tournament, losing to Oklahoma in the Semifinal. And the three lost a single game in the Regional and Super Regional rounds and all played in Omaha. Mississippi State lost two games and received a gold-plated path to Omaha. Texas Tech and Vandy each lost their conference tournaments in three games and received gold-plated paths to Omaha. Texas Tech got Stanford, though, as opposed to Vandy being gifted East Carolina in the Supers. Virginia played three games, a normal weekend for most teams. Arkansas played four games in five days, winning the SEC Tournament and was two one-run losses away from Omaha. The SEC, which forces eight teams to play an extra game to try and get more than eight Tournament berths can drain pitchers. LSU playing six games in six days is a great example of the SEC ruining pitching staffs to try and get one more berth. Almost every other conference has a Tournament. The Pac-12 will be fine. The Pac-12 teams will have to play an additional three mid-week games over the course of the entire season. Almost every other conference does it. I am sure that the Pac-12 will be fine. It will help to level the playing field with regards to the RPI advantage that the ACC, Big 12 and SEC currently enjoy.

The only question isn't where, or when, or how, or what. It's WHY? I can't seem to find a reason to justify it.

I can't seem to find a reason to justify it. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ I'm don't know how much in TV revenue would be generated but the cost has to be pretty high to fly, lodging, food, etc.. For 8 30 or so player teams plus coaches, trainers, administration, etc..

The only question isn't where, or when, or how, or what. It's WHY? I can't seem to find a reason to justify it. Same reason why there is a Basketball Tournament. RPI. The Pac-12 has been at a distinct disadvantage for years, because the Pac-12 does not have a Tournament. RPI is a stupid metric, but, while it is still in use, you have to play the same slate as everyone else, or RPI gives everyone else a boost.
