So, my son played ultimate frisbee and South Eugene is the powerhouse in the state. They had about 70-80 kids out for Ultimate Frisbee in the spring. That is suddenly the sport they they are known for. Crazy.

Pretty well-publicized how dangerous the sport is, especially with concussions. Perhaps it’s factoring in.

They should see, if they can drop down to 1A for football. Football is a dying sport, which is great because Oregon State is mostly a basketball and baseball school anyway.

Regarding 1A, I don't know if you were joking but that's exactly what I thought. I've been in Yoncalla for a couple days and they are practicing. I saw seven guys on the field Wednesday but 11 yesterday with three other kids doing some running.

My wife went to Churchill. When I told her about no football team she said “but I’ll bet they have 2 soccer teams!” Nailed it! Ha ha

If that's true...and I think it very likely that it is...it makes me not so supportive of pumping nearly $200 million into Reser stadium.

Meanwhile, about 3 1/2 miles north at Sheldon HS, while their website doesn’t list any rosters, their posted team photos show a 49 player varsity squad, a 26 player JV squad and a 38 player freshman squad. Sheldon’s enrollment is about the same as South at 1429. Needless to say a very interesting contrast between two similarly sized, similar demographic, public high schools in the same school district.

How has South Eugene performed on the field in the last several years? Has the program been dismal, and thus not appealing to play for?

It literally comes down to culture. Parents of children that attend South Eugene, don't want their kids to play football. They want them to play soccer. You can take it for what you will, but this is not a shock to us that live here and know what is going on.
The worst part is (and really beside the point, as south Eugene parents hate football and love soccer for reasons other than safety) that football can be made a lot safer, but the folks in charge don't want to take control and make the changes to save the sport. The helmet is the problem, and until that gets sorted out, the game will continue to die out. Until you stop using your own head as a weapon/battering ram, the head injuries and post concussive syndromes will prevelate. Some parents won't care, but the majority will.
I have two very big, athletic children. One of them is a boy. I couldn't care less if he ever plays football. If he wants to, I will be all for it, but I'm not making him do it. If they ever change the helmet/rules, I'd encourage him to play.
I may be crazy, but I suspect not.

We did a lot of research and believed in the Xenith helmet. We furnished our own for our son from youth through high school football. A running back and corner. Very satisfied. Now fibulas and elbows were a different story!

It’s not just the safety issue, but there is a much more aggressive culture around football than other sports. Even parents exhibit it. So different from soccer. Picking up my son from soccer practice and walking by even the pop warner football teams, this was readily apparent.
