Wilky, you obviously have a very strong opinion on OSU's hiring decision. No argument with that but it might help make your case if you would specify who would have been a better choice than MC. Just a name or even several names for coparative purposes and then we could engage in some real dialogue. I take it you have an issue with MC's lack of college coaching experience, but beyond that your argument appears to be based on emotion. "I would have hired ___________because he was more qualified than MC in these specific areas" 1. Sparky Anderson 2.Rod Dedeaux 3. St Dennis Erickson Something like that might help we readers get to the meat of your argument.

I know that Pat did not endorse Yeskie for head coach. He was not offered osu job. Casey did endorse Mitch Canham. Yeskie was to still be on staff as PC and told Mitch that. But was butt hurt and bolted for AZ. Lateral move. Maybe got a few more bucks. Then had difficulties with Johnson at AZ….. Bolted for A&M….. sense a theme here ?…. I think Yeskie is a pretty good pitching coach. And recruiter. I’ve seen the other side of him up close as well. Not pleasant. I’m sure he will get a HC job soon…. Maybe not P5. Depends on what he’s willing to accept to get HC experience.
I don’t know if the HC decision made at osu was correct. I know Barnes didn’t make the decision without ALOT of input. Mainly Pat Casey.

I'm pretty sure Yeksie was next in line before MC threw his hat in the ring......there are still those close to the program who believe it was a mistake to not give Yeskie the HC job. I guess time will tell one way or the other

So far, it has been a lose - lose( or toss up ), for both sides . 1) We did not do as well as expected ( Dormer failed IMO ) 2) Yeskie flamed out ( personally ), and the expected powerhouse pitchers with the best available pitching coach - also did NOT meet expectations ! With the talent we had, we should have won more games - but, it took way too long to sort out the best lineup ! Meckler, Melton, Forrester, Bishop, et al ! Pitching looks like both a plus and a minus ; new guys coming in look capable ... however, what are we going to do for relief and closers ?

It's amazing we made it as far as we did. We did not have an upperclassman pitcher drafted in the first six rounds. The guy who was supposed to be our ace fell flat on his face and our All-American closer could not be trusted to hold a 9th-inning lead. We did not have any position players drafted. Our best hitter missed most of the Pac-12 season and all of the NCAAs. And WTF is Bishop?

Should have said BOYD PLUS. Your last paragraph sums up the failures through the year - given the pre- season coaches comments about the pitching staff and the returning players hitting prowess !

Our best hitter missed most of the Pac-12 season and all of the NCAAs. And WTF is Bishop? In what way did we waaay (with three a's!?) overachieve? Oregon State was picked to finish fourth in the Pac-12 and finished sixth. 16-14 is the worst conference record since 2010. If you exclude 2020, 37-24 is also the worst overall record since 2010. Just by way of example, in 2011, Oregon State was picked to finish eighth in the Pac-10. The Beavers had fewer top 20 round draftees in 2011. Our starting (one of the draftees) and third-string catchers each missed more than 15 games because of broken bones in their hands. Oregon State had to convert a relief pitcher into the back-up catcher. The Saturday starter (Ben Wetzler) shat the bed and was demoted three times on the season, finishing with a 4.66 ERA. Josh Osich was recovering from Tommy John surgery. He was never really 100%. He was the most healthy against UCLA and threw a no-hitter, the first Oregon State complete game no-hitter since 1947. But otherwise, Osich had a 4.12 ERA. Osich's final five starts (all of May and the Corvallis Regional) were three Osich losses and two no decisions in which Osich was pulled in the fourth and first innings. (In the Corvallis Regional Championship Game, Casey pulled Osich in the second inning because he "didn't look right." Casey held Osich out of the Nashville Super Regional. And Osich was drafted in the 6th Round, #207 overall.) Cam Booser was expected to be the Sunday starter until Osich got healthy. Booser had two starts on the season. Booser finished throwing 2.2 innings with an ERA of 16.88. Booser had Tommy John surgery after the season and transferred out of the program. Booser was drafted in 2013 and made it up to A+ ball. He currently is on the roster for the Independent Chicago Dogs. And that team finished second in the Pac-10, seven games above .500 in conference and 41-19 overall. 2011 Oregon State hosted and won the Corvallis Regional. Wetzler missed the entire regional, destined to start the Nashville Super Regional Championship Game in a losing effort. Osich was chased in the second inning of the Corvallis Regional Championship Game against Georgia. How many a's are in the way that 2011 Oregon State overachieved? I was pleased that Oregon State rebounded after Melton getting hurt. And I was pleased that Oregon State came back from the game 1 loss to Dallas Baptist to almost make it to Omaha. There were achievements to be sure. But in no way would I say that Oregon State overachieved. They did not completely crap the bed, which is great, but I usually expect more out of the baseball team. You saw the worst results on the field in terms of wins and losses in more than a decade. Just looking at stats, it is hard to believe that the coaches could not get better production out of the pieces that they had. Maybe, I look back in 5-10 years, and I reassess and come to a different conclusion. I just disagree with your assessment.

I agree with that assessment . You did a great job of pulling the facts together , both recent and historically . I think that we need to constantly challenge the programs and coaching staff to get better… I get really upset with the ‘expectation’ that we are not going to be very good … so let’s take a pass this year ! ‘ I certainly do not expect to win everything, but look at what Tinkle and those guys did last year with a load of no names taking over for some significant losses ! I loved that. Pre- season coach talk for baseball was way out of touch… and they over promised and under delivered. The two uo series were enough to sour me on the entire season … but, over time - at least we started plugging in some guys that could hit the ball with authority ! I expect this year to be a turnaround ! Go Beavers !

Pretty clear after watching us for an entire season that we were picked fourth based on our history, not on our ability. We had no power once Melton got hurt, had too many players who struck out way too much and an inconsistent pitching staff with an "ace" who was not good for much of the year.
Anyone who picked the 2011 team to finish 8th in the Pac-10 was a fool, because it was loaded with talent. It included future MLBers Matt Boyd, Tyler Smith, Osich, Sam Gaviglio and Andrew Susac; future pros Kavin Keyes, Nate Esposito, Danny Hayes, Carter Bell, Ryan Dunn, Bryan Stamps, Parker Berberet, Tony Bryant, James Nygren, Jake Rodriguez, Wetzler, Scott Schultz, Ryan Gorton and Booser.
I don't need to wait 5-10 years to know there were not five future MLB players on the 2021 team. No way do 19 players from the 2021 team play some level of affiliated baseball. In 2011 we played to the level a team with 19 future pros should play. In 2021 we did far better our overall talent and a team that is one of the last 20 standing in June certainly did not "take a pass." To suggest that is ridiculous.

I find it interesting that 2010 was such a crap year just two years after winning it all for a second time. The parallel is uncanny. It’s unfortunate that we didn’t win it all in 2017 when we should’ve, but with Covid last year, we are essentially on the same trajectory. Hope it doesn’t take seven years to put together another dream team.

It was a weird season. We were not far from an Omaha team and Abel KILLED us on Friday nights. Lots of holes in the batting order but guys emerged. As much as I appreciate Mully as an all time Beav, he was a liability a good amount of his appearances......baseball is funny. If Abel and Mully pitched like these did as freshmen, and Melton doesn't get hurt, this team was goin to Omaha.
So did they overachieve? I dunno......I think some key guys underachieved, and some guys emerged.......and all I know is, we have a solid core and some good incoming talent. I'm pumped to see how our coaches develop these kids. Be nice to not have to worry about what Yeskie is doin, if u know what I mean.
