Tyree Reed is an academic high achiever and has always wanted to be a student-athlete in it's purest form. He is a gifted athlete that is equally gifted in the classroom. Reed was a superstar at 15 with Team USA and was the number 1 ranked prospect for a year with Prep Baseball Report. He was ranked 4th by Baseball America.
In the summer of 2020 he suffered a knee injury which was followed by a shoulder injury. He struggled throughout the 2021 season at American Canyon HS as the DH and hit a paltry .258. Scouting reports shifted to the negative with analysts describing his swing mechanics as "crude" and alluding to the fact that he was filling out his frame and was suddenly "slowing down". One report said he was "undisciplined" and had a poor approach, chasing balls out of the zone. Another said, "he has yet to prove he can hit good velo or advanced breaking stuff".
In summary, the internet scouting reports say he's slower, his arm is now fringie" - he'll have to move to a corner OF position, and his hit tool is highly suspect.
Can this be the same kid that had raw power, leverage and hit to all fields a year ago? Can this be the same kid that blistered the 60 in the mid 6's? Is this the same kid that can throw a baseball 350' on a line? Is this the same kid that defends CF from gap to gap and allows your corner guys to cheat over towards the line?
Tyree Reed is now ranked in the 270's and projects mid 1st round but as the scouts note, "most teams will be willing to let him honor his commitment to Oregon State."
If you activate your BS filter, you will find the truth - Tyree is an exceptional athlete, a gifted athlete and he's coming to Corvallis to be a Beav. He's over the injuries. Life is good with Beaver baseball.

What's the point of these kids "withdrawing" from the MLB draft? Maybe I'm mistaken but I don't remember seeing this sort of thing in previous years. At any rate, cool for us. Agreed - It is cool for us. I think the " point" is self explanatory. It means "I'm going to college...don't waste your pick". In previous years it's usually been less formal than a social media "withdrawal". This year, especially over the past 2 to 3 days, it's picking up some real momentum and a number of top 400 picks have said "nope". More to come tomorrow?? Maybe it was the stories about the Bowie Baysox / Oriole minor leaguers living in their cars, because with their terrible salaries they couldn't afford the team hotel. A 150K - 250K bonus doesn't go that far, when 2-3 years later in AA you find yourself amongst the working poor. Or maybe it's that there have been a huge number of examples in the past couple years of players that do play in college for 3 years and then go on to sign 500K to $8 million bonuses....including a well known Beaver. The depth of draft this year, after last years 'shorty' may be a factor. NIL money might be a factor. At any rate, college life as opposed to bus rides/burgers is apparently making sense to a growing number of talented young 18 year old athletes.
