Tommy Prothro was his head coach at UCLA. Always seemed like a nice guy to me.

Terry Donahue was a finalist for the Oregon State job in 1975 with Rich Brooks. The pair lost out to Craig Fertig in one of the worst hires in Oregon State football history. Dick Vermeil bolted in early in 1976, and Donahue was promoted to head coach, a position he held for the next 20 seasons. Donahue won five Pac-10 Championships. Donahue won four consecutive New Year's Day Bowl Games (1983 Rose Bowl, 1984 Rose Bowl, 1985 Fiesta Bowl and 1986 Rose Bowl) and won the bowl games in the next three seasons (1986 Freedom Bowl, 1987 Aloha Bowl and 1989 Cotton Bowl) to become the first coach to win a bowl game in seven consecutive seasons. His UCLA teams also finished ranked in five other seasons. He quit during after the 1995 season, due to a falling out with the athletic department at UCLA. |

Obviously I don't know and I'm not sure I even believe it . . . but the best thing ever to happen for Rich Brooks and Terry Donahue was not to be offered the OSU job in 1975.

Just my opinion, but Brooks probably could have made it work back then. He was very tough and very smart. Everyone else was doomed.
Seems like the events of the '60s provided cannon fodder against us for years afterwards too (regarding recruiting).

I think credit for the continued decline is far more the responsibility of OSU Admin than any one incident dating from several years before. The president of the school could have cared less about sports, and our salaries and facilities suffered for it. Put us into a hole that took all those years to dig out of. |

That’s because our BB coach was very well established prior to that President. There was no $$$ put into the football program during his tenure. I actually think Kragthorpe could have gotten us over the hump with more administrative support. |

Apparently Vermeil split very close to signing day and UCLA AD JD Morgan elevated Donahue to HC to try to save their recruiting class. Pardon my ignorance, but what were "the events of the '60s [that] provided cannon fodder against us for years afterwards"? I didn't pay attention to OSU until 1986, so I am ignorant of many OSU events before that.

Its doubly ironic that the OSU assistant who demanded that Fred Milton shave his off-season goatee was… D line coach Rich Brooks (Dee was out of town at the time). |

Miller had three non-winning records in his first four seasons at Oregon State. |

Our program had slipped substantially at that point under Valenti. He was president for Miller's first year at OSU. |
