The top 4 teams in RPI were ranked 1-4 by the committee. Those four teams went a perfect 12-0 on the weekend.
Ole Miss was fifth in the RPI and was bounced in two games by #29 Tulane and #92 Utah.
Clemson was sixth. They steamrolled #104 Western Carolina in two games by a combined score of 39-13. (Western Carolina beat #48 and bid-stealer Nebraska 4-1 to eliminate the Huskers in two games.) However, Clemson got steamrolled by #32 Oklahoma State a combined 21-4.
LSU was seventh in RPI and ranked eighth by the committee. LSU disposed of #130 Utah Valley 7-1 but split with #24 Rice (getting outscored in the process 12-10). They play the de facto Baton Rouge Regional championship game this afternoon against Rice to decide who will play Coastal Carolina next weekend.
South Carolina was eighth in RPI. South Carolina dropped the opener to #113 Rhode Island. South Carolina beat #29 Duke and Rhode Island in a rematch. South Carolina appears on their way to the supers, beating #29 UNC Wilmington in the first game and up 8-1 in the eighth of the second game.
Vanderbilt was ninth in RPI. Vandy dropped both games: the first to #78 Xavier and the second to #55 Washington.
NC State was 10th in RPI. NC State beat #145 Navy in two games by a combined 30-9, but lost the regional to #12 Coastal Carolina.
Mississippi State was 11th in RPI and swept through their regional.
Florida State was 13th in RPI and swept through their regional.
Texas Tech was 14th in RPI. They lost one game to #21 Dallas Baptist but won the other three to advance.
UL Lafayette was 15th in RPI. They beat #105 Princeton but lost twice to #21 Arizona.
TCU was 16th in RPI and swept through their tournament.
Virginia was 17th in RPI but got bounced in two games by #36 East Carolina and #100 William & Mary.
There were more upsets this year than last year but not as many as in 2014, when five of the eight national seeds lost in their own regional (Oregon State included) and another four hosts lost as well.
All told, the team with the better RPI is 65-34, .657.
The Pac-12 went 8-7, 3-1 against teams with lower RPIs and 5-6 against teams with a higher RPI. The Big West went 6-4, 3-0 against teams with lower RPIs and 3-4 against teams with a higher RPI. UCSB beat Washington. Without that win, the Pac-12 was 5-5 against teams with a higher RPI. Washington's loss to Xavier was the only loss to a team with a worse RPI.
The west looks like it deserved at least one regional and maybe a second. Vanderbilt, Lafayette, and Virginia should not have been regional hosts.
