Bennycat says: the revamping of the Cats pitching staff might not be a finished job, yet. Garrett Irvin threw seven innings of five-hit ball at Sunken Diamond in a 20-2 win six weeks ago. Having said that, Irvin threw 111 pitches against UC Santa Barbara in the Tucson Regional and then pitched like hot garbage against Ole Miss in the Tucson Super Regional, giving up seven earned runs in 1.1 innings in a 12-3 loss. It reminds me of that wildly-unnecessary 124-pitch performance that Luke Heimlich pitched in the 2018 Corvallis Super Regional. Heimlich's next three starts were all bad, not 12 earned runs in 3.2 innings hot garbage bad but bad nonetheless. Fun fact: The last time that two Pac-12 teams met in Omaha, the "road team" (Oregon State) won 14-5 to eliminate the "home team" (Washington), which had lost two nights earlier to an SEC team by one run. The Beavers rebounded to beat an ACC team that they lost to in game 1 and then beat an SEC team twice in a row to punch a ticket to play SEC #2 Arkansas (Tennessee and Mississippi State tied for second in the SEC with the Vols receiving the two-seed in the Tournament, because of the East Division Championship). Every time in the past 35 years that 2+ Pac-10/12 teams have played, the last Pac-12 team standing has won the National Championship. Of course, the last time that it did not happen was 1985, after Stanford beat Arizona by 7+ runs. The Cardinal were eliminated the very next game in a 10-4 loss. Stanford's first loss to eventual champion Miami was 17-3.

I was reading yesterday how Tennessee didn’t adjust to the larger dimensions of TD Ameritrade. Just for comparison here’s some dimensional data.
Lindsey Nelson Stadium (where Tennessee plays); 320-Left, 360-Left Center, 390-Center, 360-Right Center, 320-Right
Goss Stadium at Coleman Field (GO BEAVS!); 330-Left, 365-Left Center, 400-Center, 365-Right Center, 330-Right
TD Ameritrade Park; 335-Left, 375-Left Center, 408-Center, 375-Right Center, 335-Right

Stanford now faces a real test in either NC State or Vandy. Having to win 3 games against those teams to reach the fnals will be difficult. Stanford will need to continue their hot hitting streak and be judicious in their use of their pitchers.
They're well coached, maybe they can get it done. If they do, I think they can win it all.

Wow, Stanford has two touchdowns against the Cats. Fire Yeskie! How could this happen to the finest pitching coach in America?

Stanford will need to continue their hot hitting streak and be judicious in their use of their pitchers. They're well coached, maybe they can get it done. If they do, I think they can win it all. The Cardinal played in game 1, which gives them more options, then if they had played in game 3 or 4. If they can win on Wednesday, they can have Brendan Beck back on Friday on five days' rest (or possibly more, if there is rain between now and then). Alex Williams only threw 90 pitches. Williams could be back on Saturday on four days' (MLB full) rest. The question is who does Stanford throw on Wednesday? The Cardinal will probably not see Rocker or Leiter on Wednesday. If Stanford can get past Vandy, NC State-Stanford sets up to be fun this weekend. 2018 came back to win the College World Series, losing Game 1 on Saturday. Stanford would be in position to repeat the trick, if they can win the next three over the next five days. Looking back at Oregon State's 2006 run, that was ridiculous. The Beavers played in game four, lost by 10. Recovered in 40 hours to beat Georgia 5-3. Recovered to beat Miami 29 hours later 8-1. Recovered to beat Rice 20 hours later 5-0. Recovered to beat Rice 19 hours later 2-0. Finally got 44 hours to breath, just to lose to North Carolina 4-3. Recovered to beat North Carolina 21 hours later 11-7. Recovered to win the College World Series 3-2 20 hours later. South Carolina won after losing game three on Sunday, but that was after they added a day to the College World Series between the 2007 and 2008 College World Series, giving the teams more time to recover. USC lost game three and then won five games in the following seven days to win the College World Series in 1998, but the teams got an extra day to come out of the losers' bracket. The Trojans were the only team that managed to win five straight after losing the opener, though, in that format.

All you see on D1 Baseball is Hailstate this and Hailstate that. Me thinks they need a good old fashioned Beaver Beatdown. Think we already gave them that….

His "hot garbage" v. Ole Miss was a very bad 47-pitch outing on June 12 (7 days after his 111-pitch UCSB game). 9 days later Stanford blows him up. I don't see a close comparison to Heimlich at the end of the 2018 Championship Season. 111 is not an overuse number. Rests of 7-days and 9-days are surely not overuse.

Not sad to see Vandy get knocked down a peg Vandy was bragging before the College World Series that they had the third-highest winning percentage among teams that have played in at least three College World Series: 1. Southern California .740 2. Minnesota .708 3. Vanderbilt .696
Oregon State was not listed, but fourth on that list would be:
4. Oregon State .636
The Dores have been to four College World Series: 2011 (beating Oregon State in the Nashville Super Regional), 2014, 2015 and 2019. Vandy was in the Final Four in 2011 but lost to Florida twice by two runs. Vandy beat Virginia in 2014 in three games to win the College World Series and then lost the Championship Series to the Cavs in three games in 2015. The Dores then won the National Championship again in 2019.
Vandy has never finished with a losing record in Omaha. Hopefully, Stanford fixes that tomorrow.
Also, if you remove the 1952 College World Series, Oregon State is 21-10 (.677) in Omaha. With Vandy's 1-1 record, the Dores are currently .680 in Omaha. If Stanford wins tomorrow, Vandy would be .654 in Omaha.
In summation, hopefully Stanford wins tomorrow and knocks Vandy down a peg or two.

All you see on D1 Baseball is Hailstate this and Hailstate that. Me thinks they need a good old fashioned Beaver Beatdown. Hailstate this: Hailstate that: Mississippi State has gone to 12 College World Series and finished with a winning record at Omaha exactly once, losing to UCLA by a combined 11-1 in the Championship Series. Most trips to Omaha without a National Championship: 1. Florida State 23 2. Clemson 12 2. Mississippi State 12
Of teams that have played at least 25 games at Omaha, Mississippi State has the second-lowest winning percentage, only ahead of Clemson.
Oregon State has almost double the number of wins at Omaha in five fewer appearances.
Mississippi State can Hailstate all that they want. Actions speak louder than words.

The Longhorns' two were in 2002 and 2005. LSU's two were in 2000 and 2009. South Carolina's two were in 2010 and 2011. Vanderbilt won two of the previous six National Championships. I would love for it not to be three of the previous seven.
