At the US trials in Eugene, Crouser threw the big ball 23.37 meters, breaking a record of 23.12 meters which had stood for over 30 years. We grow em big and strong out here.
for the metrically challenged, 76.67' vs 75.85' - that is 10" farther than the old record, a big jump considering how long it took to get this throw.

He must be related to the Crouser that threw the shotput years ago in Eugene? For the decimal feet challenged/annoyed, that works out to 76' 8-3/32" ( here's the conversion tool I use, but they go through the formula at the bottom of the page).

His cousin Sam was a javelin thrower at UO. Both grew up in Gresham (one went to Barlow and one to Gresham High). Two brothers were throwers in the 70's (?) for uo. They are the dads of Sam, Ryan and Haley. Not sure who is who.

The Crouser family has a long history of outstanding throwers. Larry Crouser was a javelin thrower at Gresham in the 50s. He had three sons: Mitch, Dean, Brian. All won multiple state titles at Gresham, late 70s-early 80s. I believe all went to Oregon, all had solid to excellent careers in college and beyond. Mitch is the father of Ryan, Dean is the father of Sam and Hayley.

On TV they listed his hometown as Boring. Of course the announcer has to make a wise crack.

Mitch Crouser went to the University of Idaho and was a discus alternate on the 1984 USA Olympic team. Dean Crouser had the longest throw in the country in 1978 before blowing out his elbow. He still won the state title in shot put that year. He attended the University of Oregon and was a one-time 16-pound shot put winner and a two-time discuss winner. Dean still hold the University of Oregon records in both shot (69-1) and discuss (216-2). Dean was a five-time All-American. His discuss throw still ranks sixth all-time at the collegiate level. Brian Crouser won the Oregon State Championship in shot-put javelin and discuss. Like Dean, Brian went to Oregon and won the National Championship in javelin in 1982. He was hurt in 1983 and 1984 but rebounded in 1985 to set the all-time collegiate javelin record. Brian got cancer in 1986 but came back after surgery to set the world record in javelin of 262' He finished 29th at the Olympics in 1988 and 21st in 1992. Brian's boys are younger than Mitch and Dean's kids.
