Our 2021 recruiting class member, Tanner Smith finished his final prep campaign in stellar fashion. The Basha Bears were young this season and managed a winning season at 12-9 which exceeded pre-season predictions. Chandler's Basha HS competes in the rugged Arizona Premier 6A section against some of the best programs in the state. Tanner Smith, a 6-1, 225 pound catcher was the Senior leader of the Bear team and his 2021 performance was a bright spot in the Bear's season. Tanner played in 19 games and was 16-49 officially with 16 BB and 4 HBP. He reached base 36 times in 69 plate appearances. He had 10 doubles and 4 home runs and struck out 10 times. He scored 21 runs and had 22 RBI with 1 stolen base. His slash lines were .327/ .514/ .775 with an OPS of 1,290.
Tanner's career totals are: 53 games, 42-137 for a .308 BA, 43 R, 56 RBI, 15 doubles and 12 home runs, 31 BB, 6 HBP, 30 K, and 5 SB. Playing summer ball, Tanner is a well known performer to the tournament sponsors, coaches and pro scouts. He has played on 6 WWBA championship teams and has been selected to 11 all tournament teams dating back to his 15u days.
Tanner is good defensive catcher that receives, blocks, frames and throws at a high level. Two years ago, he posted a 1.85 POP time with a C velo of 76 mph. His exit velo was captured at 93 mph in 2019. He has a quick, compact stroke with natural lift and he drives the ball deep to all fields. His thick build and lower leg power project power + in the coming years. Along with cannon-armed Wilson Weber from Gresham-Sam Barlow HS in this incoming class, Beaver catching will continue to shine in the years ahead.
