The last time that a three-seed won a Regional on a Tuesday was Oregon State defeating Virginia 7-3 in 2007.
Virginia just pulled the feat by winning the Columbia Regional over Old Dominion 4-3. Much like 2007, Virginia turned the trick by storming through the losers' bracket.
Oregon State won Game One 3-2. The Beavers then gave up six runs in a 12-6 win. Oregon State then won the next three by 6+ runs.
The last time that Oregon State lost a Regional Game Seven was to UC Irvine, a three-seed in 2014. UC Irvine won the Super Regional and the first game in Omaha. Irvine then gave up six runs in a 6-4 loss and were knocked out of Omaha by a more well-rested Texas 1-0.

I hate thinking about the '14 regional A great pitching performance sandwiched in between two horrible ones - that regional just bit it and we had a better pitching staff. |

I was just looking through old posts. Irvine won the Stillwater Super Regional by winning by four and then a closer (1-0) deciding Super Regional game. Virginia won by four and then won 5-2 in the deciding Super Regional game. In Omaha in 2014, Irvine won and then lost 6-4 to the eventual champion Vanderbilt before being eliminated by Texas. Texas beat Vandy by four before bowing out 4-3. In Omaha in 2021, Virginia won and then lost 6-5 to Mississippi State before being eliminated by Texas. Texas beat Mississippi State by three before bowing out 4-3. In 2014, Virginia was more well-rested than Vandy and outscored the Dores 17-14. However, Vandy won game one and three by a single run to win a National Championship. In 2021, Vandy is more well-rested than Mississippi State. How this plays out remains to be seen. |
