Paul Mainieri has stepped down after 15 years as LSU's head baseball coach. Mainieri also had successful stints at the Air Force Academy and Notre Dame. Immediately, the usual list of prospective replacements has surfaced. This list includes most of college baseball's hottest coaches - all considered to be viable candidates for the LSU opening. LSU is considered to be a "plum" - great facilitires, a large and rabid fan base, big budget, SEC competition, good recruiting base, and a $mil + salary. The downside? Expectations are extremely high - it's a pressure cooker and you have to win big to keep the job. The list:
Brian O'Connor - Virginia Link Jarrett - Notre Dame Erik Backick - Michigan Cliff Godwin - East Carolina Jay Johnson - Arizona Tony Vitello - Tennessee Jim Schlossnagle - TCU
And then there is this from Baseball America . . . . One wild card is Pat Casey. The former Oregon State coach retired in September 2018 after 24 years as a head coach and has been working in the athletic department since. But he’s never closed the door on returning to the dugout. It would be a big change, but if Casey, 62, is ready for a return, this would be an intriguing opportunity.
