Sure. You and I knew that but a lot of Beaver football fans didn't. They were stunned by his sudden departure. In retrospect, he has mentioned several times leaving Oregon State was the biggest mistake he ever made. Trading a faithful Beaver nation for the franchise gutting 49ers was a terrible decision. Saddled with a bloated payroll of over the hill and unable to play free agents, signed by Carmen Policy and with the cost cutting axe of Denise DeBartolo and John York looming, Erickson was doomed the day he signed his contract. Sad day all around. Good grief. Anyone who was " stunned" by Dennis leaving OSU for an NFL HC job (and $$$) must have been fresh off the hay wagon. Or is it the turnip truck?

He's doing a ton of work on his College Hill house, or building another house on the property. His kids and grandkids and parents and brothers live in Oregon. I don't think he's going anywhere, especially Texas. But who knows, Pat's a pretty private person and he's certainly not telling me anything. And sisters.

Sad day all around. The decision didn't hurt Dennis at all. He made a ton of money with the 49ers. He got two more years in the NFL pension plan. He fell into a job with Idaho for about eight months, and then parlayed that into a 5-year stay at ASU, at a higher salary than we could pay. Leaving OSU resulted in a financial windfall that left him set for life, it he wasn't already set for life.

Erickson has never been about money. Certainly he wants to be compensated for his effort but money has never influenced his coaching moves. The NFL attracted him solely because as he put it, "the coaching is so good". Competing at the highest level was the attraction in both Seattle and San Francisco.
He is a coach's coach, happiest when sitting at a table with high school coaches having a beer and talking about the way to leverage a box safety with the tight end.
