Oregon State started 15-12 in the Pac-12:
2012. Oregon State started 15-12 and 35-18 overall. The Beavers swept Oregon to finish 18-12 and 38-18 in the regular season. (38-18 was only good enough for an RPI of 27 in 2012.) The Pac-12 was stacked in 2012. UCLA won the Pac-12 and earned a National Seed. Arizona finished second and was handed a Regional and Super Regional. Oregon finished third and earned a National Seed. Stanford was handed a Regional, as well. Arizona State finished fifth but was sitting out the postseason, because of some NCAA infractions. Oregon State was shipped to Baton Rouge and played SEC Champion, LSU. In the Baton Rouge Championship Game, Taylor Starr got the start but pitched terribly, allowing three runs in a third of an inning. Scott Schultz came on and threw 8 2/3 innings of three-hit ball, allowing two runs, only one earned. In the meantime, Oregon State scored five runs on Ryan Eades (2nd Round, #43 overall) to take a 5-3 lead before Schultz gave up an unearned run in the seventh and a game-tying run in the ninth. Dylan Davis started the 10th and gave up a walk to Austin Nola (5th Round, #167 overall) and a double to JaCoby Jones (3rd Round, #87 overall) before throwing a wild pitch to score Nola for what turned out to be the game-winner. Nick Goody (6th Round, #217 overall) came on to pick up the save. 6-5 LSU in 10 innings.
Oregon State was the only team that did not survive the regional. The other four went to Supers with three hosting. (Stanford went to Tallahassee to play #3 Florida State.) LSU lost to Stony Brook in the Baton Rouge Super Regional, Oregon lost to Kent State in the Eugene Super Regional, and Stanford lost the Tallahassee Regional.
The three best teams in Omaha were all on one side of the bracket. Arizona beat Florida State 4-3. Arizona beat UCLA 4-0. Florida State beat UCLA 4-1. Arizona beat Florida State 10-3 to advance to the Championship Series. The rested Wildcats beat the Gamecocks 5-1 and 4-1 to win the 2012 National Championship.
2012 feels a lot like 2021 in many ways. The final standings:
1. UCLA 20-10
2. Arizona 20-10
3. Oregon 19-11
4. Stanford 18-12
5. Arizona State 18-12
6. Oregon State 18-12
If UCLA sweeps Arizona State, all six teams will fall within two games of their Pac-12 record in 2012. 2012 was probably the strongest the Pac-12 has been since Utah was added in 2011. It would be nice for the conference to get back there. Plus, it set off a great two-year run for Oregon State, the Beavers winning the Pac-12 both seasons, earning top three National Seeds both seasons and coming a foot or two short of setting up an All-Pac-12 NCAA Championship Series against UCLA.
