Everyone is looking at this club and coming up with their own analysis and this fits in perfectly with the forum. I’m not sure the staff is over rated and looking through my own personal lens this team is full of quality roll players and that is the problem. Where is the elite talent we have had in the past. Is this a victim of two coaching changes in two years? I would be inclined to say yes. Hey, we lost some talented players in 2018 and during the staff changes.
In most situations offensive skills win out over defensive skills With the exception of Melton and a very short list of talented freshman ( Boyd) who will get better with more AB’s. There is no separation at the plate just mediocracy. Look at our outfield options except Meckler and I would hope this proves my point. Would Casey, Jones, McDowell, McMahan be regular starters in years past? Maybe individually but not as a group. Dukart is another example. I think Gretler has a larger up side both at the plate and especially in the field.
I’m not happy with the state of the program and really hurts to say that let’s wait and see what Mitch can do with more talent and his guys. Not sure if I have the patience but I have no choice.
And Yeskie, my own opinion that his reputation proceeds him. Who couldn’t recruit great pitchers with OSU’s reputation and Casey at the helm, great offense and defense to help out the pitching staff. There were a lot of great pitchers that never reached their talent level under him. I can remember some years we had great starters but the pen was thin/terrible. Bailey is a class person who would make a great assistant on any team, especially with recruiting and representing OSU.
