There's your OSU connection Good Lord...the US 4x400 team looked like Secretariat at Belmont. I liked that when Lee Evans won the 400, another US runner gave him 10. The forerunner of the high five, the bash, the fist bump, and the chest bump. Good stuff. |

The greatest T&F team ever assembled by the USA was the 1968 Olympic squad.
World records from Jim Hines, Tommy Smith, Lee Evans and the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. Our own Dick Fosbury revolutionized the high jump, Bob Beamon jumped all the way to El Paso. Hurdler Willie Davenport, miler Jim Ryun, pole vaulter Bob Seagren, Randy Matson, Al Oerter, Bill Toomey. Add Wyomia Tyus, Barbara Ferrell and Madeline Manning on the women's team.
Beamon's WR lasted 23 years and has still only been surpassed once. Hines' record lasted 15 years; Smith's 11; the 4x100 record lasted 20 years and the 4X400 record lasted until 1992.

His 400m WR time was 43.86, not 48.86 :^) He ran the first 200m in 21.4 seconds and held on to beat his fellow teammate, Larry James, who finished with a time of 43.97. WaPost Article |

All incredible marks but remember Mexico City is at elevation 7350 (2240m). There was a reason the jumps were high and long, the sprints fast, and the distance races slow.

Generally true except for Kip Keino’s Olympic Record 3:34.91 1500m. A phenomenal performance at altitude only 1.8 second behind Jim Ryun’s WR. On that day even if all the finalists had been flown down to a track at sea level Keino still would have won. |

The next-closest mark, by the finest long-jumpers in the world, was 8.27, in the prelims. In the finals, no one else jumped further than 8.19. Beamon's record jump was simply out of this world, at any altitude. |
