Since I helped take this thread away from football, I'll try to steer it back as well
In Terms of DL depth...
Saying goodbye:
Jordan Whittley moving on was neither a surprise nor that huge a loss. Don't get me wrong, I really like Whittley and thought he brought a lot to the table when he played, I just don't think he would have played here, and probably won't at Michigan either. Hopefully he is fully recovered from his earlier medical travails, but it wouldn't surprise me to hear of his medical retirement before too long.
Evan Bennett on the other hand is a BIG loss, and one that leaves us all scratching our heads. Fresno state was the first to offer him a scholarship back when he was coming out of highschool, and is much closer to his home town (driving distance). I wish him well, but he leaves a definite hole to fill. With four more years of eligibility it isnt just his skill level, but the years and stability that leave with him that will be missed. The transfer in helps (assuming he is similarly talented, which IMHO is a big assumption), but Kenote Shcad is only here for a single year.
The Stalwart:
Isaac Hodgins has been and still is our best DL on the roster. Even since his freshman year he has probably been our best DL (debateable), but last year and this year for sure. Issac is stout and stable and will have to be teh anchor of this defense if we hope to stop any opponents run game. With the lack of depth we have at DL we will have to hope and pray for ZERO injuries ::Knocking every piece of wood near me:: Isaac is a potential All-Pac 12 talented DL, only a junior as well. Congrats to him for recently getting engaged.
Question Marks:
Jeromy Reichner, Simon Sandberg , and James Rawls have all shown good skill in falshes, but still need to prove it for a full, non-covid, year. For Reichner the may trick is being able to stay on the field injuries have plagued him in both the last two years. If he can stay on the field and play like he did all the way back in 2018, he is a starter that can really contribute. Of course health is a skill as much as anything else. I for one am really pulling for him. It would be great to see him and his brother shine together for a year. Both Sandberg and Rawls showed very nice signs in the abbreviated 2020 campaign, we will need them to continue getting better to have a shot at a decent DL in 2021. Sandberg is partcularly interesting being very new to the sport, coming all the way from Sweden to play football. Of everyone on this list he has the greatest potential to become a DL/DE star out of no where.
Saying Hello:
Keonte Schad out of all the Beaver DL, Schad was actually the highest rated coming out of high school and had plenty of interest from other power five teams including the previous years national championship participant, Georgia. It looks like 2020,like for most of us, was a bit of a let down for Schad, hopefully he reverts to 2019 form and plays in every game for us. He certainly has enough size to be effective (6-3, 300lbs). I am curious what a "Youth Studies" major is
Omarion Fa’amoe is an early enrollee, incoming freshman and is the most likely true freshman to get playing time, mostly on the back of the extra time he has gotten with the team as an early enrollee, like most freshman DL he needs to put on weight and strength, but based on his film has great quickness and instincts.
Sione Lolohea has only been on campus for a year, but I haven't heard much about him. He was fairly well regarded coming out of high school in Hawaii, he is another wild card pull of the deck to burst on the scene now that some playing time has opened up. He actually played in all seven games last year so he has some experince to boot.
