Minneapolis/St. Paul is a beautiful area, one of the nicest large metro areas in the country. Wonderful lakes, a huge river for recreation, a great public university, tons of excellent private schools and franchises in all four pro sports. Judging it by what transpired there last summer, following the murder of a citizen by a policeman sworn to protect him, is like judging Corvallis after a trip along the bike path from the skatepark to Pioneer Park, along the bypass between downtown and Circle Boulevard, or by the homeless people sleeping in doorways downtown every morning. Neither scenario presents a true picture of the respective areas. Well, I talk to people in the Twin Cities pretty regularly. Most would choose to move here(OR. Their perception is all of Oregon is the same) yesterday. Between winter, summer, etc they view OR(PDX, Corvallis, heck even Eugene) as a “better” place to live. But what do I know...

Well, in 2021 the population of the MSP metro area was 2,946,000. In 2010 it was 2,686,000. So in 11 years, more than 260,000 people moved there. So apparently somebody still wants to live there.
I prefer Oregon, don't like the winter cold. But the summer lake culture in Minnesota is outstanding.

Guess I don’t get your point other than you proved your “Google” skills. I didn’t say Twin Cities was a bad place to live. Clearly it is a preferred destination to a lot of other parts of the country.(and world if you want to dig deeper into the growth there) I said in my experience, the people I talk to, have the thought of preferring OR. People I have spoken to, not analytics. I will defer to your superiority, well because I don’t really care.

I thought the screech machine claimed people were fleeing PDX. Anyone here been to downtown PDX lately? I haven't, but I've friends who have fairly recently (these aren't people who lean to the right politically, 1 also lives there part time) and said it's been trashed and looks like a third world country. If true, there's a lot of people, inside and outside of downtown PDX, who might have memories of what the downtown area was and not realize anything might have changed. Just curious if it's still trashed.

Had to drive out I84 to PDX a few days ago, most of that trip looks like the concrete jungle of yesteryear. 8 foot tall Graffiti EVERYWHERE and trash on the roadway, and homeless camps set up along side the road. If that's what they want, they have it!! Oh, and a few businesses boarded up. It's beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Refuse to go downtown anymore...

What you describe was there too. Same for SFG. The problem is not limited to one metro area or state: it's everywhere. Finding a solution will be a complicated set of policies, likely to trouble both ends of the spectrum. May we return to football now?

The homeless problem is pretty much city-wide and similar to what is happening in other large west coast cities, more than likely a result of the pandemic. Graffiti follows this crowd like a magnet. Not to be confused with the remains of the protests downtown that impact about 6 blocks around City Hall/Justice Center/Federal Courthouse which is likely to remain a dead zone until office workers return in the Fall. The rest of downtown hasn't changed much, we still go to NW 23rd/Slabtown and the Pearl District several times a month and it hasn't really changed other than some restaurants being closed or others expanding their outdoor seating, but still lots of good food options.

I thought the screech machine claimed people were fleeing PDX. "Everything is perfectly fine in Portland. This is Baghdad Bob reporting live from the Mark O. Hatfield federal courthouse. Back to you state-run media."

In both downtown PDX and Corvallis in the last month or so I have had to step over human excrement on the sidewalk, smh Not sure why or how the pandemic "caused" this and the excess(or just more visible?) homelessness, but I definitely agree that it will be a long and arguous process to dig out of it. I do think and hope that this will help spur folks to realize that homelessness is still a wide and prevelant issue that we need to address and stop sweeping under the rug.

When the voters of oregon legalize the possession of small amounts of meth, heroin, etc..it tends to increase the homeless problem. Thank you voters. Not.

Thought you wanted to return to football. “May we return to football now?” No one else seems to want to do that. So, I'll go with the floe.
