Notes and Highlights
Trailing 3-0 scored 2 runs in the 6th to break our 41 scoreless innings streak.
In the 7th with one out frosh Bailey McLaughlin hit a weak pop up to the catcher but the catcher lost it and a couple pitches later Bailey homered to left to tie it. Next batter, Frosh Madison Simon, singled, surviving a fifteen pitch at bat. With two outs Jr. Missy Nunes singled to right but Simon was thrown out trying to go first to third. Frustrated she tried to stretch it since the right fielder had shown in the previous 13 innings that she had a strong accurate arm. We would have had runners at 1st and 2nd with two outs and our third hitter up. URRGGGG. Was Mitch waving her on? :-)
Had our chances. In almost every extra inning OSU had a runner in scoring position. We won the LOB tally 12-4.
Sr. pitcher Nerissa Eason started in the circle. Though she gave up three earned runs in the first she retired twelve straight at some point. I feel bad for her. She has a live arm and haven't seen her improve over her time at OSU. Control has been her issue. I imagine that was the book on her coming out of high school.
Frosh Grace Messmer is continuing solid play at short.
This Stanford team is now 27-13 and we are 15-22. We are not inferior to them up and down the roster. Berg needs to feel some heat. I'll root for her and eat crow if she turns it around but we have better players than our record indicates.
Conspiracy alert: The game announcer enlightened me to the fact that our previous leadoff batter was not on the roster anymore. That would be one Jr. Maia Radar, one of my favorite players. I checked the OSU athletics website and she was gone. Reminds me of the line by Pharoah when he banished Moses (Charlton Heston) from the land. "The name of Moses shall be stricken from all obelisks and pylons, all books and tablets." Haaa, another player into the Berg graveyard? I wonder if there are investigations into why players leave programs? Anyone know? Is Berg running them off? I understand players leave for many reasons but these are solid players.
