The nine games with the most impact on Oregon State's RPI today; who to root for, if you want Oregon State's RPI to increase; and how much comparative value each game is worth.
1. Oregon State @ UCLA Oregon State 55
2. Grand Canyon @ Sacramento State Grand Canyon 13
3. Utah @ Arizona Utah 11
4. Oregon @ Washington State Oregon 10
5. Long Beach State @ UC Irvine UC Irvine 10
6. St. Mary's College @ BYU BYU 10
7. San Diego @ Gonzaga Gonzaga 9
8. California @ Washington Washington 1
9. Santa Clara @ Loyola-Marymount Santa Clara 1
As it currently sits, the best result is if all three Oregon @ Washington State games rain out. If either team wins, Oregon State's RPI ranking goes down, because RPI is a generally terrible metric.
Because of BYU's rules about not playing on Sunday, BYU and St. Mary's College play game two tonight and will finish up tomorrow. BYU won the opener 12-0.
Oregon State went 3-2 in the past week and moved up from 28th in RPI to 27th. The goal is at least 25th and probably closer to 20th to earn a regional host spot.
If all nine games come through the correct way, Oregon State should move from 27th to about 22nd. If the correct teams come through this weekend, Oregon State could move up to about 12th. That would put the Beavers in an excellent spot to host with a sweep over USC before host sites are announced, which is supposed to happen at some point between the USC and Arizona State series. (Oregon State plays the teams with the three best RPIs since the trip to PK last, which really puts a damper on improving RPI over the next two weekends.)
The UCLA series is the Beavers' best chance to improve upon their RPI before the Arizona State series. The Beavers need this series in order to set up for next weekend.
Whether they host or not, the Beavers likely would be a one-seed with a 10-5 or better finish over the final 15 games. Short of that, the Beavers are probably a two-seed or worse. Oregon State is probably a two-seed if the Beavers go 6-9 or better. The Beavers are probably still comfortably in the field with a 5-10 finish. Short of there, it gets dicier.
