I heard this story for the first time on Tuesday.
Flashback to May of 2007, the last home game series of the year. We're getting our butts kicked by ASU. Pretty sure they swept us. Just before the end of Sunday's game, Murphy, who was ASU's fiery head coach, approached a friend who sits near the visiting team's dugout. And through the fence, he said "don't leave after the game, there's something I want to tell you".
When he returned, Murph pointed to our dugout and said "see that guy over there"? He was pointing at Pat Casey. He added "that is the best coach in all of college baseball. He has performed a miracle here in Corvallis."
How cool is that? And if it wasn't for Murphy, we never would have made it in the 2007 field of 64. He was on the Selection Committee that year. Unlike Meggs, who screwed us over in 2016, Murph stood up for us that year.
