Yeah, no. While having Melton hit may have helped the Beavers secure a victory, we still lost on Saturday with him in the lineup. There were several points in the game yesterday that could have swung the outcome in one direction or the other. Lots of little breaks that didn’t go our way and we couldn’t plug all the holes. There was enough talent on the field and at the plate to win it for the Beavs, which is why it went to extra innings. We lost in Saturday by giving up 11 runs. Melton scored two runs. If he had done that against Irvine on Sunday, Oregon State would have won 8-7. OK, let’s hypothetically put Melton in the game and let’s hypothetically say he scores 2. Either you’re playing illegal baseball with 10 players or you’re gonna have to take Meckler out and the one run he scored. Tie game. Still. And look what a silly exercise it has become. I’ve got no problem if you want to say that Melton makes us a better team and that he can help us greatly. Sure. But we’ve won games without him and we’ve lost games with him in. That’s baseball.

We lost because of things like getting doubled off of 1st base on a OF fly and getting a runner on 3rd with less than 2 outs and stranding him there. By being bunting off successfully by the same batters. By having a opposing batter strike out and the catcher throwing the ball away allowing the other team to extend their inning and making a game out of what was a 5-0 lead and having our starting pitcher pulled. By walking and hitting lead off batters (and everyone else) and by starting players who have trouble hitting the weight. For those of you who thought this series was played at playoff caliber play, you got to be kidding me. Okay, I guess it was if you were little league.

When you have holes in ur lineup, the good hitters are on base for the not-so-good hitters.

We've got a pretty hefty team, apparently.
